It?s Fitness Friday, and we want to have a heart to heart with you.
It?s the time of year that many people are wearing red, and not just for Valentines Day.
Here?s Anna Key and Kevin Ready with some heart truth about your health.
February is American Heart Month, and did you know that heart disease is the number one cause of death for men and women???
Anna and Kevin will tell you about ways to prevent or manage heart disease with foods and exercises that will keep your heart healthy and strong:
You have probably heard a low fat diet is good for your heart, but there are multiple types of fat, and not all of them are bad.
Poly and mono unsaturated fats are found in nuts and nut butters, hummus, avocado, salmon, tuna, and canola or olive oil. These fats actually protect our heart and raise our HDL, or good cholesterol.
The fats we want to avoid are the saturated and trans fats. These are solid at room temperature and found in butter, cheese, ice cream, fried foods, desserts, and fatty meats. And beware of the hidden trans fats. Even though you think you may not be getting any, you are.
The FDA states if anything is less than .5g, it can be documented as zero. So watch out for the word hydrogenated oil on labels! Also, choose a low fat margarine like Smart Balance, get reduced fat dairy products, limit frequent desserts, and choose more fish and chicken over red meat.
So, the next time you want to order a double cheeseburger and fry, choose a grilled chicken sandwich ? your heart will thank you for it.
And speaking of your heart, did you know that the Greek word for ?heart? is ?cardio?? The best way to strengthen your heart is through cardiovascular exercise.? Activities such as walking, jogging, and swimming for at least 30 minutes on most days of the week will ensure that your heart stays in top condition.?
So eat a low fat diet, keep moving, don?t smoke, and keep stress under control.? That?s good advice that you can take to heart.?
