JOLIET ? The NASCAR haulers return.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Hauler Parade to Downtown Joliet is back this year.

More than 30 haulers carrying NASCAR cars to Chicagoland Speedway will cruise downtown on Sept. 13, repeating a unique NASCAR parade that was initiated last year.

One thing different this year, however, is that Race Fan Rally, which followed the parade last year, will be held on the next day ? Friday, Sept. 14. The rally, a downtown street festival that includes music, food and cars while drawing thousands of local and visiting NASCAR fans before the racing starts, had been held on Thursday nights in past years.

The hauler trucks will gather at Hollywood Casino Joliet at 4 p.m., when fans can get a close-up view and photographs, before they travel to downtown Joliet.

The downtown parade starts on the Jefferson Street bridge going east before turning left on Scott Street. The parade will proceed north to Jackson Street and turn left again, going to Ottawa Street for another left turn and then heading south to Chicagoland Speedway.

Race fans can watch the parade anywhere along the route. The city has named designated viewing areas at: McBrody?s Bar and Grill, 73 W. Jefferson St.; the Joliet Area Historical Museum, 201 N. Ottawa St.; and the Joliet Public Library, 150 N. Ottawa Street.

Race Fan Rally, which includes NASCAR drivers, cars and exhibitors, will run from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sept. 14 and end with a fireworks show.

The NASCAR Races are Sept. 15 and 16 at Chicagoland Speedway.

The Dollar General 300 Powered by Coca Cola, a NASCAR Nationwide Series race, will be Sept. 15. The Geico 400, a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, will be Sept. 16.

HICKS: No 2012 baseball champ in York County

Maybe I don't understand how this thing works.

I thought I did. I think I do. But I might be wrong.

Follow me on this:

When I sit down to watch the Super Bowl, I know it's a one-and-done deal. The team that wins the game is the champion. The team that loses is the top-ranked also-ran.

When I sit down to watch the World Series, I know it's a seven-game series. The first team to record four wins is the champion. The other team isn't.

The criteria for winning is perfectly clear. To me, at least.

And the same goes for the York County Baseball Championship Series between the champions of the Susquehanna and Central leagues.

It's a best-of-3 series. It's always been a best-of-3 series. One game on Saturday, one game on Sunday and a third game, if necessary, later on Sunday. Three games, if needed, on one weekend.

That's by necessity because the York County Championship is squeezed in between the playoff championships in both leagues and the Colonial York Baseball Tournament over the Labor Day weekend.

By design, it's not just a one-game deal. It's a best-of-3 series, which means one of the two teams has to win two games. That's not win one game and be ahead in another before the game is called because of rain. It's two games won, period.

So I guess I'm a little bit confused about what happened last weekend between the Susquehanna League representative -- Conrads -- and the Central League representative -- Stoverstown.

Now, I have nothing for or against either team. Or either league, for that matter, though it's appropriate that I reveal my long-time participation in the Central League for those readers who didn't already know that.

But I could care less who played in the championship series or who won. For all I care the game could have been played between Pleasureville and Felton or any other two matchups you could name. It just doesn't matter to me.

What does matter is that Conrads won the first game in the championship series last Saturday by a 5-1 score. Then on Sunday, it held a one-run lead over Stoverstown, 6-5, in the middle of the fifth inning when a torrential downpour rolled in. The game was called.

And when the two teams couldn't make the time to play on Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday or any night this week -- allegedly because they had a couple college players who wouldn't be available -- the tournament ended. So much for 25-man rosters, I guess.

Anyway, Conrads won one game and came within three outs of winning a second. Close, but no cigar.

That certainly does not make Conrads the county baseball champion.

That's the way the rules of baseball work. The game does not become official unless and until the home team is ahead after the visiting team bats in the fifth inning, or the home team bats in the bottom of the fifth inning and the visiting team is ahead.

Neither happened in this game. For all intents and purposes the game was never played.

I wish there had been a successful conclusion to this best-of-3 series, but there wasn't. And not for the first time, either. In the 39-year history of the county championship series, it wasn't played in 1979, 1990, 2000 and 2011.

I wish the two teams had replayed the second game of the series on Monday night, but they didn't.

And I wish the two teams had played a third game on Tuesday night, if necessary, but that didn't happen, either.

Or they could come back and play the second and "if" game the weekend following the Colonial Tournament.

You know there was a time in York County baseball circles -- yes, going back 50 or 60 years -- when amateur men's baseball was actually played until the end of October because the weather remained reasonably accommodating until then.

You can bet the York College baseball team will be playing well into October in its fall program. Same goes for various American Legion programs and traveling teams from all over York County. They continue to play baseball until it's too cold to play.

But these days, in the two men's leagues, if it doesn't happen before the Labor Day weekend, it doesn't happen at all. Too bad.

I'd rather see the championship played than not played.

When one team wins two games, I'm ready to hear a champion proclaimed.

That hasn't happened yet.

So add 2012 to the list of years the series wasn't played to conclusion.

But don't crown a champion.

As it stands, there isn't one.

Psychiatrist says she met with Colo. suspect once

FILE - In this Monday, July 23, 2012 file photo, James Holmes, accused of killing 12 people in Friday's shooting rampage in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater, appears in Arapahoe County District Court with defense attorney Tamara Brady in Centennial, Colo. A court hearing Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012 will examine Holmes' relationship with a University of Colorado psychiatrist to whom he mailed a package containing a notebook that reportedly contains violent descriptions of an attack. His attorneys say Holmes is mentally ill and that he sought help from psychiatrist Lynne Fenton at the school, where he was a Ph.D. student, until shortly before the July 20 shooting. (AP) ? A psychiatrist at the University of Colorado, Denver, says she met with the suspect in the Colorado movie theater shooting only once, and she believes her doctor-patient relationship with him is limited to that meeting.

Dr. Lynne Fenton testified Thursday in a hearing on whether investigators can have access to a notebook sent to her by James Holmes.

Holmes is accused in the July 20 shooting that left 12 people dead and 58 wounded.

Prosecutors believe the notebook contains descriptions of a violent attack, and argue they should be allowed to review it as part of their investigation.

Defense attorneys say the journal is inadmissible because it's protected by doctor-patient privacy laws.

Judge William B. Sylvester has called a recess to consider a defense request to close the remainder of the hearing.

Grown-up Friendships and a Little Gift for You

Children make friends in 2.3 seconds. That is in no way a clinical assessment, of course, but a simple observation on my part.

No joke. My kids are off to the playground and literally as soon as she?s stepped foot into the wood chips, my six-year-old is holding the hand of a little-girl-stranger and they are play acting at fairies and mermaids.

Happens every time.

Adults are hard pressed to become friends that quickly. It takes us closer to 2.3 years. Again, I learn that not from empirical data but from living life. And especially when friendships change from youth-fueled, school-fueled relationships to the ones we have to maintain as adults, things can be at the very least tricky.

Most friendships don?t make it through that transition. {That?s why we have those embarrassing things called reunions}

And what the heck are adult friendships supposed to look even like? When we are young we are conditioned to understand that regular contact with friends somehow equals close relationship and irregular connection means we?ve drifted.

What about when people get married or get new jobs or move to Hemet (which, for all intents and purposes, it is as if they?ve moved to the moon)? What happens when life and kids and church and everything else puts natural barriers between me and someone I love very much and want to maintain relationship with?

We just make it work.

Lisa and I?ve been friends for a very long time and we?ve seen our friendship move from everyday college roommate living, to once a month supper clubs, to now, our much more intentional friendship. She lives 4 hours away from me yet we make it work to see each other several times a year.

Is it ideal? No. Do I wish she lived next door and our kids rode bikes down the street together? Of course. Do I wish I could call her up right now and meet up in 15 minutes for a hike or a long chat over tea? Yes. But that isn?t what life is for us.

And that?s okay. We make it work as it is.

I don?t know what a good adult friendship is supposed to look like, but I know what ours does. And it is very good.

Lisa has a new line out from Dayspring called the Lisa Leonard Faith Collection . It is available only from Dayspring and not available on her site at all. It?s a beautiful collection of hand stamped, personally crafted jewelry pieces that reflect the journey that we are all on together: as women, sisters, and as friends.

Here?s a little gift for my readers: Enter LLD15 at checkout and you can get %15 off of any of the Lisa Leonard Faith Collection ? items. That code is only good until September 15th.

And until Friday only the By Grace Alone Necklace will still be $10 dollars off (which means it?s only $26 until the end of August).

My personal favorite is the Well With My Soul Necklace. I love it.

Samsung vows 'all measures' to keep products in US

South Korea's Samsung Electronics vowed on Tuesday to take "all necessary measures" to keep its products on US store shelves, in response to Apple's request for a ban on sales of some smartphones.

After winning a $1.05 billion US court judgement in a patent suit last week, Apple on Monday filed a court request to ban eight Samsung mobile devices including versions of its Galaxy and Droid smartphones.

Samsung, the world's biggest technology firm, countered in a statement: "We will take all necessary measures to ensure the availability of our products in the US market."

Rival Apple says that it reserves the right to seek permanent injunctions banning the sale of all 28 Samsung devices which a jury on Friday found infringed its patents.

But it presented a shorter list of Samsung products "to address a portion of the immediate, ongoing irreparable harm that Apple is suffering".

The phones that Apple included on its list for a sales ban are old models but still available through wireless carriers and online retailers. Samsung's newest flagship products -- Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note -- were not included.

The jury in San Jose, California decided Friday that Samsung "wilfully" infringed six Apple patents for smartphones or tablet PCs.

Samsung has vowed to contest the verdict, saying courts in other countries had previously ruled it had not copied Apple's designs.

The company did not elaborate on its strategy but it is considering removing or modifying features found to have infringed Apple's patents to keep its products on the market if the sales ban is granted.

"As a last resort, we can think about workarounds," a Samsung official told AFP on condition of anonymity, referring to possible modifications.

Judge Lucy Koh has set a hearing for September 20 to consider enforcement of injunctions against Samsung devices.

She will also hear Samsung motions to reduce or dismiss charges and Apple's request for "punitive" damages, which could triple the award.

Friday's ruling -- part of a legal battle in nine countries between the two technology titans -- was seen as a major defeat for smartphone makers that use Google's Android operating system.

More than 90 percent of the latest smartphones from HTC, Lenovo Group, ZTE Corp., Huawei Technologies and LG Electronics use the Android operating platform.

Samsung officials say their company could develop new products or software to avoid being a future target of patent litigation.

Samsung and other smartphone makers are working with Microsoft to launch Windows-based devices later this year. Samsung also has been working with Intel on a free and open mobile platform.

Samsung shares ended 1.27 percent higher at 1,195,000 won Tuesday, a day after plunging 7.5 percent -- the biggest single-day percentage drop the electronics giant has seen in nearly four years.

Warning Signs of Teen Drug Abuse at School

establishing a drug free learning environment will help them to stay healthy and safe

Teen drug abuse is one of the major health concerns in the United States of America. But this particular habit among the school going kids can be controlled by identifying the drug abusing symptoms at the right time and taking necessary preventive measures. Since teens spend most of the time in their schools, it is the mere responsibility of the teachers and the school authorities to look after their well-being. Further, establishing a drug free learning environment will help them to stay healthy and safe.

Following are the few warning signs of teen drug abuse at school, followed by the effective methods to control them.

Irregular attendance: There could be two reasons for being irregular to the school. One, ill health caused due to drug use and the second could be drug dependence. When a person starts using drugs, he feels high and hyper active which makes him use the drugs quite often leading to drug dependence. This makes him stay away from school in order to get and use those drugs. However, frequent absenteeism doesn't always mean that the person is using drugs.

Unexplained sudden drop in grades: The academic performance of a drug abusing teen will be marked by poor grades. This could be due to the lack of interest and concentration towards their studies as a result of drug abuse drug abuse directly affects the functioning of the teen's brain. Also, teens tend to waste their time by socializing more often due to their desperate need for drugs.

Loss of interest in extracurricular activities: Drug abusing teens never show interest in extracurricular activities. They try to stay isolated from the crowd or from their regular peer group and try to spend time all alone or with other drug users. Even if a teen has a lot of interest in sports and games, he tries to avoid them after using drugs.

Disciplinary issues: Certain behavioral changes can be seen in the teen drug abusers. They ignore their personal care and grooming habits. They report arrogant behavior and aggressive reactions at schools even for simple things. They lose patience quiet easily.

Reports of intoxication at school: At times, their excessive drug use results in intoxication at schools or some of their classmates may report about their drug use at schools. This could be the best identity to find their drug abusing habit.

Not returning home after school: Irregular in-time/out-time from/to the house may not necessarily mean that a child is abusing drugs, but the drug abusing kids often tend to spend more time outside or in a secluded place.

Hiding school reports at home: As a result of sudden drop in their grades, these teens try to hide their school reports from their parents and try to deceive them by telling fake stories. If the parents are particular about the report cards and the school attendance, they can easily find out their poor performance and hence can search for the valid reasons.

In order to create a positive, safe and healthy learning environment, the school authorities should take preventive measures to eradicate this dreadful habit among the future citizens. They need to create awareness among the teens by educating them about the negative impacts of drug abuse. Further, conducting random drug tests help in controlling the drug abusing habits in teens.

School authorities need to take the responsibility of providing necessary counseling to the drug abusing students and also encourage them to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

88% Robot & Frank

Surprisingly charming film, the film depends on the relationship between the robot and frank, and it totally delivered, i was sold by their relationship, wanting to see them work together and bond, and whenever they were apart, i was waiting for them to be together again, the robot is a great character, thanks to the voice by peter sarsgaard, giving him a humanity and a personality that I cared about, langella is good as always, i liked how even tho hes forgetting a lot of things, he can still remember how to pull off heists, the rest of the cast is fine too, a good score, and a nice ending

How (and why) you should enable two-step verification on your Dropbox account

57 min.

After some security woes, the folks at Dropbox have finally made two-step verification available to their users. Here's what that means, why it's important?and how to use it.

Two-step (or two-factor) verification means that logging into an account?requires two proofs of identity ? typically a password and a temporary code sent to a cellphone or generated by an app.?This process keeps?your account safe even if your password is somehow compromised (or if the cellphone which receives the temporary codes is misplaced). Without both items, it's not possible to log into the account.

In order to enable two-step verification on your Dropbox account, you'll need to sign into the Dropbox website and open your account menu (by clicking on your name, in the upper-right corner). Once in there,?open the settings and click on the "security" tab. In the "account sign in" section, you'll find the option to turn on two-step verification.?You'll be asked to enter your Dropbox password and then get the option of receiving your temporary security codes via text message or by using a mobile app. You'll also be prompted to write down a?backup code, which you should keep somewhere safe?? so that you have it in case your phone ever disappears.

And that's it. After you've gone through these steps, you'll use your password and a temporary security code to log into Dropbox. And you'll rest easily, knowing that your account is far more secure.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

2 Pussy Riot members flee Russia to escape arrest

MOSCOW (AP) ? Two members of the punk band Pussy Riot have fled Russia to avoid prosecution for a protest against Vladimir Putin that sent three of their band mates to prison, the group said Sunday.

Five members of the feminist group took part in a provocative performance inside Moscow's main cathedral in February to protest the Russian leader's rule and his cozy relationship with the Orthodox Church. The women wore their trademark garishly colored balaclavas, which made it difficult for police to identify them, and only three were arrested.

After a controversial trial that highlighted Putin's crackdown on dissent since he began a third presidential term in May, the three band members were convicted of hooliganism and sentenced to two years in prison on Aug. 17. Days later, Moscow police said they were searching for the other band members, an apparent warning to the group to stop its anti-Putin protests.

Even as the judge was reading the verdict in a Moscow courtroom, one of the band members who had escaped arrest played Pussy Riot's latest song, "Putin sets the fires of revolutions," from the balcony of an apartment building across the street.

Pussy Riot tweeted on Sunday that the two activists had fled Russia and are "recruiting foreign feminists to prepare new protest actions." No mention was made of where they went.

At least 12 other members of the group remain in Russia, another message on Twitter said.

Relationships A-Z: Hi! | SEX - Carsons38's blog

Hey all, glad you could join me on this alphabetical tour of all things sex and relationships. Now you may be wondering, ?Why Relationships A-Z?? Well, basically because I?m in love with English, grammar, and everything in between. So naturally, I felt I should combine this blog and my love of English into one big happy family! I could absolutely talk about this love of English for ages, but we?re just going to jump right in.

A is for Anniversaries

Okay, I?m going to be honest; I?ve never really understood the whole ?Anniversary? thing. I should clarify. Celebrating your anniversary annually seems perfectly logical to me, but it?s the people who celebrate every single month of their relationship that I find interesting. Why is important that you?ve been in a relationship for six months versus seven? A relationship doesn?t evolve significantly over 30 days, at least not in my opinion. Yes, you grow and learn things together, but the relationship isn?t going to go from one end of the spectrum to the other. Why does society feel the need to acknowledge every minor event these days? Pardon my rant ? I?m done now.

B is for Breakups

Okay, first of all, I realize how odd it is to talk about anniversaries and break ups in the same post. Breakups are another thing I don?t really understand though, so I thought it was appropriate. Why do they have to be such a big deal? Yeah, it completely sucks to either break up with someone or get broken up with, but the world isn?t exactly ending. Like all girls, I have that one friend. You know the one I mean, the girl who locks herself in her room and eats chocolate frosting out of the can. How on Earth is that helping anything? Falling into a chocolate coma isn?t going to make your breakup go away. Sorry ladies. Again, pardon my rant ? I guess what I?m trying to say here is I fully believe that every girl and guy out there is strong and independent enough that they can survive on their own.

Well, that?s all I have to say for now I suppose. Keep it classy, y?all.

ENQUIRER WORLD EXCLUSIVE: ANISTON MOM REVEALS SHOTGUN WEDDING ?JEN?s PREGGERS!

HOT on the heels of JENNIFER ANISTON?s surprise engagement to JUSTIN THEROUX, her mom NANCY DOW dropped a bombshell ? she?s going to be a grandmother!

?Nancy said that Jen?s pregnant and that she and Justin would have a wedding soon in Mexico. She?s so beside herself over the news that she couldn?t resist spilling the beans,? said an insider.

?Only a few days after Jen confirmed she and Justin are engaged, Nancy squealed to a few friends and family members, ?I can?t wait ? I?m finally going to be a grandmother!? ?

Actor/screenwriter Justin proposed to Jen on Aug. 10, his 41st birthday, over a romantic dinner at a New York City restaurant.

And as The ENQUIRER revealed, the 43-year-old actress is huddling with her lawyers to draw up a prenuptial agreement to protect her $120 million fortune.

?Jennifer and Justin are throwing together a shotgun wedding,? added the insider. ?They plan to tie the knot in one of Jen?s favorite vacation locales, a beach in Mexico, and they?re going to do it before the end of the year.

?Nancy said that Jen doesn?t want to be showing too much on her wedding day.?

Jennifer appeared to be showing a slight bump already ?as she filmed her latest flick, ?We?re the Millers,? in Wilmington, N.C., on Aug. 17.

Jennifer and her 76-year-old mom have had a rocky relationship since 1996 after they famously fell out over Nancy discussing her daugh?ter?s personal life in a TV interview.

They reconciled after the former ?Friends? star?s split from Brad Pitt in 2005. Since then, Jennifer has quietly provided financial support to her ailing mom, who fractured her hip and femur when she fell in early 2010.

Nancy also suffered a devastating stroke in September 2011, and as The ENQUIRER reported a few months after that incident, Jennifer promised her recovering mom a bundle of joy was coming soon.

And while Jennifer banned her mother from her splashy star-studded 2000 wedding to Pitt, Nancy will be an honored guest at Jennifer and Justin?s nuptials, said the source.

?Justin has been instrumental in smoothing over relations between Jen and Nancy,? said the insider. ?He even calls Nancy once a week to see how she?s feeling.

?He always tells her, ?Jennifer loves you so much, and so do I.? Jen knows that her mom?s health is deteriorating. So she?s thrilled to be sharing her wedding and baby happiness with her. Like Nancy told her friends, ?A grandchild is the best gift a grown child can give their mother. ?

Christina Aguilera Sports Baseball Bat And LBD In 'Your Body' Shoot

Christina Aguilera was spotted on the set of her "Your Body" music video looking feisty and hot. Xtina was photographed in a long pink wig with blunt bangs, hot pink heels and a body-hugging dress.

Her look in the video certainly matches the Max Martin-produced track's sexy vibe, on which she belts "I am a freak, I'm disturbed/ So come on and give me your worst/ We're moving faster than slow/ If you don't know where to go/ I'll finish off on my own." In her hot little black dress, Aguilera was swinging a baseball bat around, and also driving around in a baby pink pickup truck.

In some of the shots she's chatting with a model-looking guy, but it's hard to tell if he's the video's love interest or just someone associated on the production end. She previously shot some of the video on August 20 when she tweeted out a photo of her leg in fishnet stockings. Her foot, in the hot pink shoe, rests on a green suitcase.

"Your Body" is the lead single off Aguilera's next record, her first since 2010's Bionic. For it, she's rumored to have hit the studio with a number of producers, writers and artists including British production team Xenomania, who have worked with Cher, Kylie Minogue and the Wanted, as well as her "The Voice" co-judge Cee Lo Green.

She has yet to confirm when the album will drop, but did explain to Rolling Stone earlier this summer that it shows her evolution. "I'm one that likes to collaborate. I love feeding off the creative energy, and it only makes me better," she said. "I'm on a continual path both personally and professionally. All-around, it's my goal to better myself as a person and an artist, and the show is one of those contributing factors and the guys are great friends at this point. It's fun collaborating with them at this point."

What do you think of Christina's style in the photo? Let us know in the comments!

Interest on Student Loan by a Debt Collector

My boyfriend is making payments to his debt collector, and the debt collector claims that the interest is 25%. He doesn't even get a statement from the debt collector t show the amount of interest that he is paying. They just send a payment notice, saying he paid such and such amount and then the balance to his account. Can a debt collector put that much interest on the loan and is it legal to not send a statement showing how much the loan is and how much the interest rate is?

Debt Advisory Centre Scotland says debt help is available for the over-55s

Debt Advisory Centre Scotland stresses that debt help is available to over-55s, following reports that this age group are saving less and facing higher debts, according to Aviva.

If you're of a certain age and you follow the news, you might have seen reports that pensioners have 'never had it so good' and should shoulder more of the burden of the financial crisis. The government recently introduced the controversial 'granny tax' in the last Budget, when it changed the threshold of age-related personal tax allowances.

The political debate around the over-55s is on-going, with some saying that people of this age group have benefited the most from society with things like free University tuition and grants. Some say older generations have benefited from rises in the value of property and that they are still entitled to state help with fuel bills, prescriptions and TV licences, regardless of income - although that could be on the way out too, after the matter was recently raised by Tory MP Nick Boles.

But over-55s suffered the most from the tax rises in this year's budget according to the BBC, and looking at the information available, it seems that many older people are having a tough time with their finances, at an age when many expect to be putting financial stresses behind them.

There seems to be conflicting information about how much better off the over-55s actually are. The Institute of Fiscal Studies recently said that pensioner incomes have increased by 3.4% more than non-pensioner incomes since 1999.

But figures from Aviva, one of the UK's largest insurance providers, suggest that debts among over-55s are 31% higher than in Spring last year. The average amount of unsecured debt among borrowers in this age group is ?22,401.

On the other hand, the average savings pot for this age group has grown over this time. Aviva does stress that this is largely down to the fortunes of the 65-74 age group, many of whom have benefited from the removal of the Default Retirement Age (DRA) and/or have boosted their savings with a lump sum from their annuities.

People over 55 and approaching retirement, and those over the age of 74, meanwhile, are having more difficulties than the 65-74 age group. And overall, the amount that over-55s are putting into savings each month fell from ?39.97 in the first quarter of this year to ?31.05 in the second quarter.

A spokesperson for Debt Advisory Centre Scotland commented: "Everybody hopes that they will have sorted out their finances before the end of their working life so that they can retire comfortably, although figures suggest that more and more people over the age of 55 are carrying debt into retirement.

"It gets harder to sort out financial matters after retirement, but even after you finish working, there are still options available if you're having debt problems - a debt expert could still help you.

"People over the age of 55 with debt problems and a high enough income may qualify for DAS, the Debt Arrangement Scheme - a form of statutory debt management that can protect borrowers from attempts to make them bankrupt.

"There are also options that could help people over the age of 55 with a pension-only income. A debt adviser would be able to tell you more."

PFT: Vilma's restaurant won't serve Goodell

Brandon LaFellAP

Bills defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt?s first priority is tightening up a red-zone defense that was last in the league last year.

For Dolphins rookie FB Jorvorskie Lane, a chance at the NFL is a dream for a guy who was moving furniture six months ago.

The Patriots gave exclusive rights free agent Kyle Love a one-year extension, with a $500,000 signing bonus.

Jets WR Jeremy Kerley was back on the field, three weeks after a hamstring injury.

The Ravens? starting offense has reached the end zone just once in seven drives, making tonight?s game against the Jags a crucial dress rehearsal.

The Bengals have been encouraged by how smoothly things are going on offense to this point.

The Browns set a training camp attendance record (and the question is why).

First-round RG David DeCastro has improved in recent weeks, and will become just the fourth rookie lineman to start an opener for the Steelers.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak is willing to let his players bake in the heat because he?s not a fan of the artificial turf in their indoor facility.

Colts owner Jim Irsay insisted on improved special teams play (he must have sent GM Ryan Grigson a DM).

Jaguars owner Shad Khan is spending a little money to improve the player experience (unless you?re Maurice Jones-Drew).

The Titans are hoping QB Jake Locker can relax a bit?now that he?s been named the starter.

Broncos CB Champ Bailey?s taking over the leadership role once held by Brian Dawkins.

Chiefs TE Kevin Boss has formed a quick bond with QB Matt Cassel.

Raiders backup C Alex Parsons, a former practice squader, has fit in nicely.

Chargers QB Philip Rivers is playing, even without 60 percent of his offensive line.

Hall of Famer Deion Sanders said he?s been impressed with the Cowboys? CB play.

DT Marcus Thomas was afraid his career might have been over before the Giants called.

Eagles DT Cullen Jenkins has apologized to coach Andy Reid three times, and now they?re ready to move beyond their televised shouting match.

Former Redskins (and many other teams?) punter Tom Tupa was ruled eligible for worker?s compensation for a career-ending knee injury suffered during warm-ups in 2005, by Maryland?s highest court.

The Bears are well-stocked with return options, but Lorenzo Booker hopes his 105-yard kickoff return touchdown buys him a roster spot.

Lions DE Willie Young has been a true catch for the Lions out of the seventh round of the draft.

Packers GM Ted Thompson said to not look for his team on Hard Knocks anytime soon ? or ever.

After sitting behind Ray Edwards in the past, Vikings DE Brian Robison said: ?They?re going to have to pull teeth to get me out of the game.?

Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Nolan prefers to coach from the press box rather than the sidelines.

Panthers WR Brandon LaFell thinks his position group stacks up with any in the league (which means he got lost and woke up in the running backs room).

Saints defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo described his team?s tackling as: ?Not very good.?

Patriots coach Bill Belichick thinks his friend Greg Schiano is going to be a success with the Buccaneers.

As much as their quarterbacks, the Cardinals will be monitoring their left tackle options tonight.

The Rams think veteran DT Kendall Langford will team with rookie Michael Brockers to give them a strong inside presence.

The 49ers are expecting big jumps from offensive linemen Anthony Davis and Mike Iupati this year.

Seahawks WR Sidney Rice will make his preseason debut?Friday against the Chiefs.

Arts and Entertainment: Down the Rabbit Hole: Phoebe in Wonderland

Some of you may know that I have a slight obsession with all things Alice in Wonderland, so when my cousin proposed that we watch the movie Phoebe in Wonderland, I was happy to comply. (I had been meaning to get around to it anyway, so this was as good a time as any.)

Phoebe in Wonderland is about a 9-year-old girl (the titular Phoebe) who is an outcast at her rigid, rule-bound school but feels things might change with the addition of Miss Dodger, a quirky new drama teacher who encourages everyone to sign up for the school play, Alice in Wonderland. After much debate, Phoebe signs up for auditions and wins the role of Alice. While all seems to be going well on the theater front, all is clearly not well with Phoebe at school and at home. She suffers from a severely debilitating case of OCD (her hands are raw from obsessive hand-washing and her knees are scrapped up from jumping up and down the stairs in a specific pattern instead of merely descending), she confesses she cannot help but say or do certain things, and she is having hallucinations (all of which are wrapped up in the Alice storyline in some way). Despite all this evidence, however, her mother Hillary is insistent that Phoebe is just a regular child and does not have any kind of disorder.

This film was very different from what I expected from the brief blurbs given about it. My thoughts were that the movie would be a quirky surrealistic film about a young girl's imagination. Instead, it was a dramatic look at a neurodevelopmental disorder and its effects not just on the sufferer but her family as well. Indeed, the movie belonged more to Hillary than Phoebe, even if Phoebe is the one on screen more. The movie's story arc is more about Hillary's coming to terms with the idea that her daughter is not just a typical child and finding the help she needs to cope with her disorder and still be herself. Some of the most poignant scenes in the film belong to her, such as when the psychiatrist Hillary hires first tells his diagnosis and she refuses to believe it outwardly, ranting about how doctors just want to prescribe medication instead of letting kids be kids while the tears on her distorted face indicate that on a deeper level, she knows he is right. Another powerful scene comes when her husband tries to apologize for an earlier insensitive remark and Hillary responds with a whole list of things that frustrate her, including her inability to understand what is wrong with her daughter or how to help her. Still another emotional scene occurs when Hillary goes to comfort a scared Phoebe waking up from a nightmare; Hillary notices Phoebe's battered knees and both mother and daughter cry for different reasons. There are plenty of other such scenes of Hillary's struggle with mothering a special needs child as well as her other daughter who sometimes wishes that she had another sibling that she didn't have to take care of and explain away her actions to others, despite being the younger one.

In addition to these deep scenes and themes, there are a number of other messages underlying in this movie. There's the power of art as a redemptive force, as seen in the play's ability to largely subsume Phoebe's symptoms. Likewise, theater - and especially Miss Dodger - encourages the school's children to be who they are and learn how to direct their own paths. Fitting in or rather, not fitting in, is a recurring element in the movie. It is not just Phoebe and her lack of friendships with most of her peers. There's her one and only true friend at school, Jamie, a young boy who happily plays with dolls and hopes for the role of the Queen of Hearts in the upcoming school musical. And, it's also her younger sister, who is wise beyond her years and dresses up as Karl Marx for Halloween, goes on a hunger strike when she learns their dinner was not made with cage-free poultry, and worries that at 7 years old she has not produced as much as the 6-year-old Mozart did.

There's some brilliant acting throughout the film, especially by young Elle Fanning as Phoebe and Felicity Huffman as Hillary. Miss Dodger, as played by Patricia Clarkson, was an interesting character as well, with some suspecting that she can relate so well to Phoebe because she, too, has a disorder - quite possibly she has Asperger's syndrome. In addition, the filmography is mostly well done, although there was an occasional scene that was too abrupt or seemed misplaced. Throughout, I found the dialogue to be very quiet while the music soared incredibly loudly, although this is not a problem unique to this movie alone. (It is a continual pet peeve of mine to have be continually changing the volume because filmmakers seem to think that the spoken word should be barely audible but the soundtrack should blast your eardrums off.)

All and all, this is a very interesting movie, but certainly a more serious one that I was expecting. Don't go into this one looking for some light-hearted, quirky fun -- but do go in to it to explore how difficult life could be for a child - and a family - going through the process of suffering from something unknown and finally learning - and making peace with - what this unknown factor is.

Vice President Joe Biden: 'Detroit's Getting Back Up'

DETROIT - Revving up a crowd at a Detroit high school, Vice President Joe Biden offered up one of his father's old adages to illustrate the tenacity the people of Detroit possess as their city works to recover from the crisis in the auto industry.

"My dad used to say you measure a man or woman - it wasn't whether they got knocked down, but how quickly they got up. And guess what? Detroit's getting back up," Biden told an estimated crowd of 1,100 packed into a narrow hallway at Renaissance High School Wednesday.

Detroit's unemployment rate remains more than a point above the national average, sitting at 9.7 percent in June, but over the past three years, the unemployment rate in the city has decreased dramatically from its 27.8 percent rate in July 2009. Michigan's unemployment rate rose last month, jumping from 8.6 percent in June to 9 percent in July.

Biden, who called Mitt Romney a "decent" man despite boos emanating from the crowd, knocked the presumptive GOP nominee for the 2008 New York Times op-ed he penned with the headline "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt," saying that the president's approach to dealing with the auto industry proved successful.

"In spite of Gov. Romney's insistence that we let Detroit go bankrupt, we rescued the automobile industry," Biden said.

The Romney campaign claimed Biden's comments about Detroit's turnaround are "out of touch."

"For millions of middle-class families, Vice President Biden couldn't be more out of touch with the state of the economy," Ryan Williams, a spokesman for Romney, said in a statement. "After claiming yesterday, 'the middle class is coming back,' the vice president is now claiming that 'Detroit is getting back up.' But after nearly four years, middle-class families are struggling with lower income, fewer jobs, and increasing unemployment. The Romney-Ryan plan will provide 12 million new jobs, higher take-home pay and a brighter future for the middle class."

While in Detroit Wednesday morning, the vice president had coffee with Michigan United Auto Workers leaders and, in the afternoon, he will hold two fundraisers in the Detroit area.

The vice president's trip to Detroit came two days before Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, were set to campaign together in the state. A June NBC News/Marist Poll found President Obama ahead of Romney by 4 points.

The vice president shared the stage with a local phenom when he was introduced by Claressa Shields, a 17-year-old boxer from Flint, Mich., who won an Olympic gold medal in London earlier this month.

"We've had tough times in Michigan, but we never give up," Shields said. "We just get up and keep going. We keep fighting with the president and vice president who've got our backs."

While he attested to President Obama's character with stories about their close relationship, the vice president also mentioned just how well he knew some of the other presidents.

"Folks, I can tell you I've known eight presidents, three of them intimately," Biden said. "I have never, never once, in all the time I've been with this president ? I've never once in the difficult decisions he's had to make heard him ask me or anyone else, 'What are the politics in this for me?' Not one single time."

Before departing the school, Biden posed for photos with the high school's football team and offered them words of encouragement for their upcoming season.

"Hey guys, have a great season! Get up!" Biden said.

"Four more years!" one of the players shouted back.

"When you go to states, invite me. I'll come!" Biden said.

Flies learn sexed-up mates' smell

Young male fruit flies learn the smell of a receptive female to avoid wasting their sexual efforts, research shows.

Promiscuous male flies initially court all females, but are rejected by those who have already mated.

It is clear that the flies eventually learn to spot mated females, but just how they do has remained a mystery.

Research published in Nature suggests that they smell a chemical signal called a pheromone left by other males during mating.

The studies were performed using the common fruit fly - Drosophila melanogaster. This insect is used widely in genetic studies because they are easy to grow and they reproduce quickly - but principally because it is possible to generate and study flies that possess changes - or mutations - in their genetic material.

In the study, Prof Barry Dickson and colleagues from the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology in Vienna, Austria, performed a series of studies to identify the mechanism that led to this change in behaviour in older flies.

Using complementary approaches, the team showed that a pheromone called cVA was responsible. Pheromones are substances produced by one individual which modify the behaviour of another. They are widely known to work in the animal kingdom to warn of danger, define territories or attract mates.

In male fruitflies, cVA is deposited on females during mating in what appears to be another example of signalling.

In one experiment, the team showed that male fruitflies that could not sense cVA, either because of a natural mutation or genetic engineering, could not differentiate between mated and virgin females.

In another, females engineered to produce the pheromone kept the amorous males at bay, even though the females had not mated.

From the outset, male flies can smell cVA but do not respond to it. However, they soon learn to associate courtship rejection with the presence of the pheromone. This learning process is mediated by a powerful chemical - called dopamine - released by their primitive brains.

In insects, dopamine affects a range of behaviours including sleep, movement, courtship and learning. In mammals, it affects the brain and is associated with reward. Drugs such as cocaine cause release of large amounts of dopamine.

Discussing the implications of the research, Prof Dickson told BBC News: "Similar learning strategies are likely to apply across a wide range of species, including humans, and indeed there is considerable evidence that dopamine signals mediate learning in a wide variety of contexts and species."

Prof Charalambos Kyriacou from the University of Leicester said: "This research shows how an instinctive behavioural programme, in this case the courtship behaviour of male fruitflies, can nevertheless be modulated by experience - in other words behaviour is not absolutely hard-wired in the brain even in this tiny insect."

Commenting about the wider impact of the research, Prof Kyriacou went on to say: "I would expect this type of phenomenon to be quite widespread in the instinctive courtship patterns of insects or even higher animals."

Prof Kyriacou said that the findings could even to be put to use in fighting crop pests or insects that carry disease.

"These types of aversive and highly species-specific molecules might potentially be useful for the control of insects of economic or medical importance," he said.

GM Recalls Midsize SUVs - Zacks.com

General Motors Company (GM - Analyst Report) plans to recall 249,260 units of midsize sport utility vehicles (SUVs) in order to fix a potential fire hazard led by an electrical short. The recall would cover Chevrolet Trailblazer and GMC Envoy SUVs as well as Buick Rainier, Saab 9-7X and Isuzu Ascender SUVs, all from the 2006-2007 model years.

The vehicles are either sold or currently registered, particularly in the Northeast and Midwest states, including Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.

In a filing with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), GM revealed that a possible electrical short could affect power windows and door locks and lead to fire in severe cases.

The automaker has decided to replace the driver?s master power window switch on Chevrolet, GMC and Buick models. It has asked Saab and Isuzu owners to call customer service centers or the NHTSA safety hotline for information regarding the repair.

This is GM?s third recall beginning this month.? Earlier this month, GM announced its plan to recall 38,000 units of Chevrolet Impala police cars in North America after receiving complaints from two police fleet about front lower control arms that had fractured. The recall, which is expected to begin today, covers 36,413 cars in the U.S. and 1,713 in Canada from the 2008?2012 model years.

Last week, the company also announced that it would recall 10,315 units of full-size vans in 20 cold-weather U.S. states and in Canada due to fuel filler pipes that can rust and leak due to salt and chemicals used to clear snow from roads. The recall covers Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans from the model year 2003 to 2004 with left-side cargo doors.

Automotive safety recalls were brought into focus by media after Toyota Motors? (TM - Analyst Report) announcement of the largest-ever global recall of 3.8 million vehicles in September 2009, triggered by a high-speed crash that killed 4 members of a family.

Later on, a string of recalls has led Toyota to face numerous personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits in federal courts. The Transportation Department of U.S. also imposed a fine of $48.4 million on the company due to late recall of millions of defective vehicles.

GM, a Zacks #3 Rank (Hold) company, reported a sharp 41% fall in profits to $1.49 billion or 90 cents per share in the second quarter of the year from $2.52 billion or $1.54 in the same quarter of 2011. Nevertheless, profits exceeded the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 15 cents per share.

Revenues in the quarter fell 4.5% to $37.61 billion, which is lower than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $37.98 billion. Unit sales rose 3% to 2.39 million vehicles from 2.32 million vehicles in the second quarter of 2011. The automaker occupied a worldwide market share of 11.6% during the quarter, down from 12.3% a year-ago.

Adjusted earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) dipped 28% to $2.12 billion from $2.96 billion in the second quarter of 2011. Operating profit ebbed 26% to $1.82 billion from $2.45 billion a year ago.

The decline in profits and revenues was attributable to strengthening of U.S. dollar against most of the major currencies as well as weak macroeconomic conditions globally, especially in Europe and South America.
