Teleseminars | Writing and Speaking For Everyone - Gordonwalls ...

Telecourses or perhaps teleseminars are some of the best methods a data marketer offers with regard to developing great saleable content. But producing and saving a web seminar to convert in a training product, may be greater than a brand-new manufacturer is capable of. Which is unfortunate. Due to the fact making a telecourse or perhaps seminar is actually effortless ? should you choose it correct.

However , nearly all fresh producers do it incorrect!

In the event you listen to almost all of the experts, developing a telecourse or even teleseminar is not hard. Merely take a moment, start up your duplicate involving Ms powerpoint or even Keynote, then start itemizing out there what you need to convey. When you find yourself completed just sign on to your service provider, upload and begin chatting. Not a problem.

It?s no difficulty for them since that isn?t how they do it. They have got somebody else create this for them and they possess a teleprompter that feeds all of them what things to declare.

Nevertheless think about everyone else that has to create the goods we?re going to promote?

In the following paragraphs, I?m going to reveal the a little gem I have discovered for making the first telecourse. You can now create a webinar. It merely requires knowing how.

A single. Let enough time

If you think the particular gurus, it will lead you around an hour to prepare any one-hour web conferencing. Of course, they are underestimating terribly. Your Chapman Coalition review approximated that one hours associated with webinar will require about forty-three a long time associated with planning moment an average of. Even though your system pertaining to developing online seminars will affect the period, you ought to be happy to invest 1 week for every hr from the very first telecourse you generate.

2. Piece of software it out 1st

Among the techniques that well-experienced trainers depend upon will be the capability to fill-in information. A number of lines will give them adequate info in order to chat for a few minutes about them. And because they may be very well skilled, they could accomplish that together with handful of problems. They can additionally grab from which they left off once they carry out. Learning this kind of skill needs numerous years of exercise. Fortunately, new producers don?t need to depend on possessing kissed your Blarney Gemstone. There are lots of free of charge teleprompter programs available. Even so, one which just make use of them you have to produce a set of scripts. Writing down what you should state will save you the need to recover it as you go, makes it easier to recover and will allow you to concentrate on the method that you are saying the language rather than precisely what terms you?ll want to point out. It makes sense a greater high quality business presentation and a far more relaxed presenter.

Three or more. Test it 1st

Regardless of how long you?re delivering teleseminars and also telecourses, this often allows you put into practice. There exists a reason why expert famous actors run through regarding weeks prior to appearing around the stage. When coming up with the first telecourse maybe five-hundred and very first, you will find gonna be tough areas inside your very first programs. It?s inevitable. Only exercise will highlight wherever individuals tough spots are generally and provide you with the opportunity to modify all of them. Which can be another reason you must piece of software the telecourse. The software allows you to know that the updates are in reality staying incorporated over the following exercise. Understanding that it?s wise staying polished.

PST: Solo's senseless Twitter fight with Chastain

The Olympics have started gloriously for Pia Sundhage?s team. In fact, given such a rousing Opening Ceremonies just south of the U.S. women?s quarters, seen by record numbers, and such a promising start in the side?s reach for gold, things could only be better for the first ladies of American soccer if it were actually raining rose petals at their Glasgow base.

So, why are we talking about a petty and unflattering public spat ? one that has nothing much behind it?

Because U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo has made it that way.

Read up ? and then meet me at the bottom of the Twitter screen grab.

source:

.

That is Solo swinging away at NBC soccer analyst Brandi Chastain. And that is Solo being her outspoken self, which isn?t always a bad thing. Sometimes things need to be said.

(MORE: Jenna Pel?s analysis of Saturday?s contest)

The trouble is that Hope has no filter ? and sometimes things don?t necessarily need to be said. Or, perhaps, they need to be handled quietly, through back channels, with greater subtlety and less social media amplification.Solo was quite vocal in criticism for then-coach Greg Ryan back in 2007. She has also used Twitter to ?have a go? at WPS and at magicJack.

(Full disclosure: this blog is an NBC property; NBC is the U.S. Olympics rights holder, of course)

Now Chastain is the target of her social media rancor. We could have a lively discussion about Chastain as a broadcaster, and there is surely some history between Chastain and Sundhage, which means that agendas could be in play in the conversation. That?s all fair to talk about ? but it?s something beside the point here.

Because if Chastain spewed something Saturday worthy of such outrage, I sure missed it. A quick canvas of social media shows that others did, as well. Chastain has been critical here and there of the U.S. run-up to the summer games, but there was little venom in her appraisals Saturday.

This was about the worst of it, what Chastain said about defender Rachel Buehler?s responsibilities:??Defend. Win the ball. And then keep possession. And that?s something that Rachel Buehler actually needs to, I think, improve on in this tournament.?

The acrimonious Tweets came so quickly after Saturday?s final whistle, Solo almost certainly didn?t hear any of the broadcast herself. This is probably about old wounds, or it?s about bad information provided by someone beyond the team.

source: Getty Images

Either way, Solo looks rather petty in this one. Chastain had lots of good and a few bad things to say about the United States, which prevailed comfortably over Colombia.

It could be this ?new guard? and ?old guard? issue at work; Chastain was among the heroes of another day.

But is that really so important with bigger fish and chips to fry in the UK? There is an Olympic gold medal at stake, and presumably some most of the other U.S. players and staff don?t give a five-ringed hoot about what Chastain says to audiences back home, within reason, of course. They may roll their eyes a bit, but they understand that firing back on Twitter does zero for the greater gold-chasing good, so they move professionally forward.

Why would America?s No. 1 in goal potentially jeopardize team chemistry and create a wholly unnecessary distraction on such an inconsequential issue?

Good question. Maybe Solo can provide some answers; we hear Twitter is good for stuff like that.

Katherine Jackson back in California after Arizona stay

Katherine Jackson

returned to her Los Angeles-area home this morning after spending more than a week in Arizona, where she was out of contact with the children of her son, Michael Jackson.

Paris Michael, Michael Jackson's 14-year-old daughter, tweeted "grandma's here ! #thankyougod

In an exclusive statement to ABC News Wednesday, Katherine Jackson said she was "devastated" his children have been "taken away" from her while she was vacationing in Arizona. She was named their legal guardian in Michael Jackson's will.

"I am devastated that while I've been away, my grandchildren have been taken away from me, and I'm coming home," Katherine Jackson said.

Speaking to ABC News from the Miraval Arizona Report & Spa in Tucson, Ariz., where the 82-year-old Jackson family matriarch had been resting for at least a week, Katherine Jackson also addressed the uncertainty concerning her whereabouts.

Katherine Jackson is the guardian of her late son Michael Jackson's children -- Paris Michael, Prince Michael, and Prince Michael II -- but prior to Tuesday night, they had not heard from her in days. In her absence, there were reports of disputes among Jackson family members at Katherine Jackson's Calabasas, Calif., home.

"There are rumors going around about me that I have been kidnapped and held against my will," Katherine Jackson said. "I am here today to let everybody to know that I am fine."

"My children would never do a thing to me like that, holding me against my will," she added. "It's very stupid for people to think that."

Katherine Jackson said a court ruling Wednesday that made TJ Jackson -- the son of Michael Jackson's brother, Tito Jackson, and grandson of Katherine Jackson -- the temporary guardian of Michael Jackson's children was "based on a bunch of lies."

She said her stay in Arizona at the Miraval was a "short vacation and rest."

"There's a lot of lies that have been put out there and I am going home to straighten them out, and this kind of stuff doesn't make sense," she said.

As for not calling her grandchildren for days, Katherine Jackson said, "One reason I didn't call is I just gave up my phone and I didn't want to have any phone calls while I was here."

Below, read Katherine Jackson's full statement to ABC News.

Transcript of Katherine Jackson's Statement to ABC News:

Hello, I'm Katherine Jackson, and there are rumors going around about me that I have been kidnapped and held against my will.

I am here today to let everybody know that I am fine and I am here with my children, and my children would never do a thing to me like that, holding me against my will. It's very stupid for people to think that.

But anyway, I am devastated that while I've been away, that my children, my grandchildren, have been taken away from me, and I'm coming home to see about that, also.

So I spoke to my grandson, TJ, last night, that I left there to be in charge of my children -- and I never leave home without leaving them with instructions of who to stay there with them, the nanny and all of them -- and someone had let go the cook, the nanny, and also the housekeepers. I don't know who did that but they don't have that power and they shouldn't have done it.

And now, the people are saying they are there with nothing to eat. I am sure they have something to eat but it's probably not healthy because the cook is not there.

But since I have also been away, my guardianship, which I just said, my children, have been taken away from me, my guardianship has been taken away from me. And, but, I spoke to my grandson TJ and also I spoke to Prince and Paris last night and told him I would be home today and they're waiting for me to come.

And I told him it wasn't necessary for him to go down and sign for guardianship. ... I don't know who instructed him to do that -- but that's what, but he wanted me to come home before that happened, but the ruling in court today was about the guardianship and I think it was based on a bunch of lies, but I have a good idea who's doing that and who's behind that.

But I am grateful for my children that they saw that I needed rest and they wanted to take me away for a while, just a short vacation and rest up. But one thing I have to say ... that I'm here at Miraval. They have taken good care of me and have made sure that I got the rest that I needed.

One reason I haven't called is I just gave up my phone and I didn't want to have any phone calls while I was here.

My assistant, Janice Smith, have been calling back home to see how things were going and she had been keeping in contact with my nephew, I mean my grandson, and he says everything is going fine. But I was still thinking about the children and I still worry about them, but they are fine.

Before I left, as I said, I put everything in order with the appropriate people to take care of my children for me and it's really bad to hear that what's going on at home, and the children have been taken away -- but I know that ... I'll get there in time to get them back. And after I finish this, I will be on my way home.

I have to thank Miraval again for taking very good care of me and making sure I got good rest.

We don't get much -- we saw an electric show because it was lightening and we saw a rainbow.

I had a very good time here -- and if anyone wants to rest I think they should come here.

Because there's a lot of lies that have been put out there and I am going home to straighten them out and this kind of stuff doesn't make sense. So I want to say goodbye and I am on my way home.

Endorse the Anne Sullivan Macy Act & Improve Educationa?l ...

This just in...

You're Invited!
Support the Anne Sullivan Macy Act and
Revolutionize America's Special Education System for Students with Vision Loss

For further information, contact:

Mark Richert, Esq.Director, Public Policy, AFB
(202) 469-6833
MRichert@afb.net

Since its enactment more than 35 years ago, Public Law 94-142, now the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), has transformed educational opportunity for all children and youth with disabilities. However, the law does not adequately hold public agencies accountable for vital services and instruction such as braille, orientation and mobility, the provision of low vision devices, and a host of other essential services and instruction needed by students with vision loss to truly receive a free and appropriate public education worthy of their tremendous potential.

The Anne Sullivan Macy Act, comprehensive draft legislation endorsed by the American Council of the Blind (ACB), American Foundation for the Blind (AFB), Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER), Council of Schools for the Blind (COSB), Perkins School for the Blind, and VisionServe Alliance, would revolutionize America's special education system for all students with vision loss, including students who may also have additional, and potentially even more significant, disabilities.

Everyone who cares about the scope and quality of special education for students with vision loss is invited to join in the national effort to work for the legislation's prompt enactment and/or incorporation into IDEA. While the process for congressional review and reauthorization of IDEA promises to be a long one, advocates should begin now to educate federal policy makers about the critical need for the array of improvements that the Anne Sullivan Macy Act embodies.

You can find the full text of the draft legislation and a petition to sign at: http://www.AFB.org/MacyAct

An array of supporting explanatory materials can also be found at a joint AFB and Perkins School website at: http://www.ECCAdvocacy.org

If your school, association, agency, parent network, service organization, or other group can join the growing roster of organizations endorsing the Anne Sullivan Macy Act, we'd love to hear from you! Send an email confirming such endorsement to: MRichert@afb.net

Named for Helen Keller?s beloved teacher, the Anne Sullivan Macy Act would strengthen the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and improve results for the more than 100,000 children and youth with vision loss, including those who also have additional disabilities. Key provisions of the legislation include:

? Ensure that every student with vision loss is properly identified regardless of formal disability category or classification so that all students with vision loss, including those with additional disabilities, are counted and properly served.

? Expand knowledge about the scope and quality of special education and related services provided to students with vision loss through refined data collection that tracks all students with vision loss, regardless of formal disability category or classification.

? Expect states to conduct strategic planning (and commit such planning to writing) to guarantee that all students with vision loss within each state receive all specialized instruction and services needed by students with vision loss provided by properly trained personnel.

? Clarify that proper evaluation of students with vision loss includes evaluation for students? needs for instruction in communication and productivity (including braille instruction, and assistive technology proficiency inclusive of low vision devices where appropriate); self-sufficiency and interaction (including orientation and mobility, self-determination, sensory efficiency, socialization, recreation and fitness, and independent living skills); and age appropriate career education. Such instruction and services constitute the Expanded Core Curriculum, the body of services which teachers of students with visual impairments and related professionals are expertly trained to provide.

? Ramp up U.S. Department of Education responsibilities to monitor and report on states? compliance with their obligations with respect to instruction and services specifically provided to students with vision loss.

? Assist parents and educators of students with vision loss through regular and up-to-date written policy guidance from the U.S. Department of Education.

? Establish a national collaborative organizational resource, the Anne Sullivan Macy Center on Vision Loss and Educational Excellence, to proliferate evidence-based practices in the education of students with vision loss, to keep special educators current with the latest instructional methods, and to supplement state and local educational agency provision of the instruction and services constituting the Expanded Core Curriculum.

HBT: Trading Hanley is latest insult to Marlins fans

I tell ya, I woulda lost money if I had bet on the Marlins at the beginning of the season. No, not because they have failed to be a championship team. Rather, because I would have given them at least a year before the sell-off began, not less than four months.

Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante were traded. Hanley Ramirez is gone. Josh Johnson is being shopped (more on this in a few minutes). All of these may very well end up being wise baseball moves at some point down the road, but coming as they do after all of the money spent to benefit Jeff Loria and the Marlins by Miami taxpayers, all of the hype Loria created and basically demanded and all of the fan attention that, reluctantly, after years of having their hopes crushed by a penny pinching owner, was given to this team, this sell-off is an insult to Marlins fans.

This truly is remarkable. Between 2004 and 2011, the Marlins averaged the lowest payroll in all of baseball. Then they are handed a sweetheart deal on a new stadium, get everyone?s hopes up for the first time in nearly a decade and ? after three-plus months, 40% of the rotation, the second baseman, the third baseman and possibly the closer are out the door. ?On a team that can more accurately be described as underperforming as opposed to fatally-flawed. A team that, if the roster they had three days ago was kept together, could reasonably be expected to play better baseball in the second half and into next season but now won?t get to.

Someone, somewhere, explain to me why anyone in Miami should give a flying fish about the Marlins? ?What possible reason should any baseball fan in south Florida have for giving a dime to a team run by Jeff Loria?

bricks matter, supply chain excellence

Yesterday, I met a friend for coffee. She started the discussion with a question,??How are you doing? So, what is it like to write a book? What have you learned?? I smiled.?The question brought back?so many flashbacks. My mind filled with emotion. It quickly short-circuited between the shear frustration of reading the seventh, and what I hope are the final?round of edits on Chapter 5, and my rising excitement to soon hold a finished?copy of the book?that I have been working on for the past?six months. While I have?a co-author, Charlie Chase,?it has been hard work.

The book is titled Bricks Matter and it is currently listed on Amazon to publish in January.?My answer?to her?was that ?Writing 96,000 words is easier said than done. And, it can best be summed up through sharing the story of a pig and an elephant.??We then discussed the story of the pig and the elephant.

My Journey:

The book is based on nine years of experience?working with supply chain leaders. I thought that it would be easy. Prior to writing the book, I had?penned over 700 articles, worked on over 80 quantitative studies and had the support administrative assistance and?a researcher that helped me identify trends on financial balance sheets and annual reports. I love to write. However, it was not easy. It is easier to talk about the book that you are writing than to write one.

I was excited to start. I remember the discussions at the start of the process?of writing this book like they were yesterday.??I had written a book abstract and energetically shopped it around.? I was naive. I thought acceptance would be easy.?I was wrong. No one was interested in a book about supply chain from an unpublished author.?I was unknown and the consensus was that a book about supply chain would be ?boring.? I have taken it as a personal mission to prove them wrong.??In the book, I have tried to make?supply chain anything but boring. So, I smiled when my friend asked the question.

For many,?writing a book?is a rite of passage; but it is not always a labor of love. For me, it has been both. In the winter, I attended a?Monitor Event (Access to Minds). It was?a gathering with other thought leaders. We were?speaking about book publishing. ?I?was naive. I was surprised how many attendees were?published authors, but?had outsourced the writing of their book to a?ghost writer.? Not so for this old gal: I have pounded the keyboard on planes, in hotel rooms?and at the end of my kitchen table for sixty hours/week for the past six months. To write the book ,we analyzed twenty-five years of annual reports and seventy-five interviews. Each chapter took six months to write, and it has now been read by four editors. We have gotten approval on forty-one case studies/quotes and written and rewritten the book chapter by chapter.

I can now?roll out of bed and not have ?write chapter X? on my to-do list.?It is gone from my desk and on its way to the printer.

So, here I thought that I would share insights?from the book based on?a question that another friend asked me at a strategy day in New Jersey last week. His question was,??So after writing your book, what is your advice for supply chain leaders?? What are the top points that you would highlight for them to consider??? This is the subject of this blog post.

My Advice:

I firmly believe that we do not have supply chain best practices.?Instead, I think that we have emerging practices. In the interviews for the book, I spoke to?seventy-five supply chain pioneers. It was?good for me to reflect back, to think about the evolution, and hear the energy?in the voices of the pioneers?as?they spoke of forging the processes that we know?today.?It gave me perspective.

In the building of today?s supply chain processes, I think that we ?got side-ways? in the evolution of applications.? We confused requirements for systems of record with systems of commerce and decision support.

We implemented a lot of technology and continuous improvement programs without a long-term road map. Today, companies have a lot of systems that they just don?t use.

So, in short, my advice for a supply chain leader, in advance of getting a copy of my book, are?nine points:

  1. Know?Total Supply Chain Costs. This sounds simple, but it is not. I am amazed by how few companies really know their total supply chain costs. While they have had a myopic cost focus over the past two decades, it has been very focused on the vertical silos of manufacturing, distribution?or procurement.?They know the costs inside these silos very well. They do not know the trade-offs of the costs across the silos well. Very few (my estimate is 5%) know their total supply chain costs and can make decisions to effectively trade-off the costs of make, source and deliver. In the words of one pioneer, ?My cylinders are firing hard, they just are not all firing together and in the same direction.? The key is alignment of the functions to the supply chain strategy with a clear focus on total costs. Supply chain leaders just cannot get there without a strong supply chain finance group.
  2. Rethink Metrics. Start at the?Ends and Work towards the Middle.??The ends of the supply chain are fragile. One of the stumbling blocks is metrics. As long as we reward sales teams?on volume and procurement organizations?on purchased costs, progress on building the end-to-end supply chain will be fretful and slow. One of the companies that I admire gave me insights on this?last week. They said, ?When we changed our equivalent unit measurement from a volume-based to a profit-based unit, it became much easier to drive supply chain excellence.? This happened for them fifteen years ago and I think that it has been a cornerstone of their success.
  3. Redesign Outside-in. This sounds simple. It is not. While companies complain about their lack of flexibility, and the slowness of the supply chain?response, they have been slow to question historic practices and to use new forms of data to sense market conditions. They have clung to traditional forms of transactional data?like they were?tablets handed down by Moses?from Mount Sinai. New forms of data along with new capabilities in analytics give us the ability to decrease latency, improve demand sensing and decrease the bullwhip effect. Yet, too few are trying.
  4. Define the CSR Program for Value.? The first Fortune 100 manufacturer to publish a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program was Dow Chemical in 1996. Procter and Gamble followed suite in 1999. Since then, all Fortune 100 manufacturers have some form of a CSR program. However, most are disjointed. Most focus on cost control?not on the greater proposition of using the CSR program to redefine value.? Some of my favorite stories for the book were Toms Shoes and IBM Global Asset Recovery (GARS).?With every pair of new shoes sold, Toms Shoes distributes a pair of shoes to a needy child.? As of 2012, they have distributed? over 1 million shoes in 25 countries. It is part of their brand promise. In a similar vein of making corporate?social responsibility part of the brand promise, in 2002, the IBM GARS group pioneered a reverse logistics process to refurbish equipment and prepare it for resale. Products are recycled?through demanufacturing?and manufacturing processes over and over again.?In 2011, the GARS group processes 33,038 metric tons, or 73.4 million pounds, of high-tech and electronics products.? Less than 1% of the electronic materials are scrapped in landfills.
  5. Align and Coalesce Value Networks. When companies say the term ?network?, they think of ?supply networks?. However, I see leaders working on demand, supply and design networks in separate and distinct programs.?I believe that the evolution of Market-driven Value Networks will see these coalesce to drive more value.? While supply networks are a natural extension of supplier development efforts, design and demand networks are newer.? In the book, I share insights on how leaders build demand networks to improve the transparency of demand data with channel partners.?Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is a good example of a company that has transformed its business model through the use of design networks.
  6. ?Define your Terms and Build a Supply Chain Strategy. Use Them to Build a Guiding Coalition. While all companies want to drive supply chain excellence, they are not clear what this means to them.? The problem is that most companies that I work with do not have a clear supply chain strategy and they unknowingly ask for teams to work on supply chain excellence using vague terms that are not actionable.?I get to read many supply chain strategy documents; and I see. over and over again, for?99% of supply chain strategy documents that I read, I see that?the company wants to have an efficient, agile and responsive supply chain. However, when I ask companies to define what this means, they look at me with a blank stare. There are no industry specific definitions for the terms ?efficient?, ?responsive?, and ?agile?. They need to be defined.
  7. Initiate Continuous Improvement Programs in Demand Planning and Focus on Forecast Value-Added Analysis.?My advice for all is to stop trying to get perfect on imperfect numbers. Instead, measure bias and error and try to reduce it, but design supply chain network and inventory systems to use the ?probability of demand? not the ?absolute number.? I am a big fan of Forecast Value-added Analysis. It is explained well in Mike Gilliland?s book, the Business Forecasting Deal (reference http://www.amazon.com/The-Business-Forecasting-Deal-Eliminating/dp/0470574437/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&The).
  8. Understand your Supply Chain DNA and Build Supply Chain Potential. Each supply chain has its own supply chain potential. Leadership in the supply chain needs to drive the right mix of strength, agility and balance while managing the trade-offs of customer service, forecast accuracy, inventory management, costs, corporate social responsibility, and asset utilization. This is easier said than done. Supply chains are complex.?The trade-offs are not intuitive. To meet this challenge, I recommend that companies invest in network and inventory modeling technologies.? One company?s work that I am impressed with in this area is General Mills. They are using Llamasoft?s new Supply Chain Sherpa (application on tablet) to help teams better understand supply chain trade-offs in decision making. For more on the work that they are doing check out this U-tube video http://youtu.be/8mJSP4YDtWk).
  9. Go Horizontal.??By now this theme may be like beating a dead horse for the reader, because I know that I hit it hard and often. However,?it is worth noting that the processes of the last decade were vertical supporting the strong silos of make, source and deliver. To build the end-to-end supply chain from the customer?s customer to the supplier?s supplier these strong vertical silos need to be connected by horizontal processes. The most common are revenue management, sales and operations planning, supplier development and corporate social responsibility. Without strong horizontal processes, you cannot achieve balance or drive agility.
  10. Processes are Evolving. We do not have Best Practices. Instead, we have Evolving Practices.? I started my career as an industry analyst believing that we have ?best practices?. After studying the evolution of practices for the last ten years, I now know that the practices are evolving. It is like riding a moving sidewalk. They evolve right underneath our feet.?I hope that the book gives you and your teams some perspective for the journey.

Wrap-up

As for the pig and the elephant, my lips are sealed. Their stories lie deep within the book. They are?light-hearted stories?that I hope that you can use to better understand how to drive supply chain excellence.?They?enrich the story of Bricks Matter. ?To learn more,? you will just have to read?it for yourself.

On a side note, I am now building training modules that will launch with the book. Each chapter will have interactive training and will come complete with experiential exercises. The training is designed for teams that want to learn more about what drives supply chain excellence.? You can follow the development of the training modules through the Supply Chain Insights Community (http://supplychaininsights.com/services/community/)?that launches on September 5th, 2012.? Let me know if you would like to try it out with your team.

This week, I have a week at home to write reports. Look for three new reports to go up on our website this month.? We publish reports openly on slideshare.net and at www.supplychaininsights.com.? Let us know your thoughts. We would love to hear from you.

Bear Bile Industry Reportedly Shrinking in South Korea, but Chinese Market Stays Strong

Is the often-illegal market for bear gall bladders and bile for use in traditional Asian medicine starting to shrink? Yes and no and maybe.

At least 1,000 Asiatic black bears (aka sun bears, Ursus thibetanus) live in tiny, cramped cages in South Korea, where they are farmed for their gall bladders, which can sell for up to $25,000 or more for use in traditional Asian medicine. Many of these bears are continually drained of the bile from their gall bladders in the years before they are old enough for their organs to be harvested. As I wrote last year, bile and gall bladders are often used to ?treat? conditions ranging from epilepsy to hair loss to impotency. These medicinal claims have no scientific backing.

But the days of bear farming in South Korea may be numbered. Many farmers want out of the business, according to a report from the news site Dong-A Ilbo. Bear farmers, facing a shrinking market and nonexistent profits, are pressuring the South Korean government to take the animals off their hands at a cost the government has calculated as up to $88 million. Farmers say the price could be as low as $2.6 million if the government euthanizes most of the bears, but the South Korean Ministry of Environment says that isn?t an option.

So what is driving this change? For one thing, bear farming is immensely unpopular in South Korea. A 2011 poll conducted by the World Society for the Protection of Animals found that 90 percent of South Koreans think bear farming is inhumane and support ending the practice in the country.

Meanwhile, bear farming is incredibly expensive. Under South Korean law, bears cannot be harvested for their gall bladders until they are at least 10 years old. Meanwhile, they each eat about $1,700 worth of food every month. That adds up. Some owners are reportedly turning to the black market to sell their products before the bears are old enough to be legally harvested.

In addition, the legal trade in bear products is extremely limited. Bears are protected under South Korean law as an endangered species?a designation that should prohibit all trade in bear products?but the government granted an exemption in 1981 for bears that were imported from other countries and then farm-raised. (The government banned imports in 1985 and is now considering ending the farming exemption.) Meanwhile, South Korea is a signatory to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, which forbids international sale of Asiatic black bear products. That means there is no legal international market for South Korean gall bladders or bile.

Yet here lies the irony of South Korea?s bear market: although bear farming is unpopular and bear bile imports illegal, South Koreans still buy a lot of bile products?they just tend to buy them outside of South Korea. According to the organizations Animals Asia and the Korean Animal Welfare Association, which are running a campaign to stop the bear bile trade, 30 percent of the 300,000 South Korean tourists who visit China each year buy bear bile products to bring home, a violation of international trade laws.

In fact, it may be the size and scope of Chinese bear farming that is putting South Korea?s industry to sleep. China?s bear farming industry is 10 to 12 times the size of South Korea?s, with at least 12,000 animals being drained of their bile, and has been heavily criticized for its brutality. Poaching of wild bears is also rampant in China. Last month police in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region arrested what was characterized as a criminal gang in possession of bear paws and meat from an estimated 43 animals worth at least $3.15 million. Also last month five of the last 33 wild bears in the Changbai Mountain area of Jilin Province were killed for their gall bladders, fur, meat and paws. The meat and paws are considered delicacies in some areas. Last year a smuggling operation carrying more than 1,000 black bear paws weighing 1.2 metric tons was discovered in the Russian city of Blagoveschensk, which borders China.

So although bear farming may be winding down in South Korea, the practice remains prevalent in China, and demand for bear bile products appears to be as strong as it ever was. Shutting down bear farms in South Korea will be a victory against superstitious traditional medicine and for the animals, but there?s still a long way to go before the trade?both legal and illegal?is ended altogether.

92% Marvel's The Avengers

All Critics (279) | Top Critics (44) | Fresh (258) | Rotten (21) | DVD (3)

Never underestimate the entertainment value of the Hulk Smash.

If you are a Marvel fan, then The Avengers will feel like Christmas. Thanks to the merry doings of the director, Joss Whedon, all your favorite characters are here, as shiny and as tempting as presents under the tree.

Ultimately, it all comes back to Whedon: His clear vision for each character and how they might be profitably intermingled; his unexpected knack for action choreography; his funny, tender, immaculately constructed script.

A spectacle in the grandest sense of the word ...

Whedon, a pop-genre magician best known for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is a master of viewer manipulation - because he never gives up his own seat in the crowd.

The performances are so well-pitched in The Avengers, meshing with such vividness and ease, that it's tempting to overpraise the good but not great movie that surrounds them.

The filmmakers play a conservative game, not setting out to make a great movie but simply making sure not to screw it up an entire franchise.

Feels like actual Marvel Comics are being injected directly into your bloodstream. It's simply jaw-dropping.

While it reflects a movie culture that has traded originality for scale - one wonders if there's a shred of originality anywhere in the film - The Avengers is grand, throwaway fun.

Yeah, it's all that. A tent-pole cash cow for the studio, a dream come true for fans, and treat for action aficionados, 'The Avengers' comes at you as the first true "summer movie spectacular" of the 2012 season.

Wonderful blink and you'll miss them comic beats in the middle of the finale's mayhem. And what glorious mayhem!

The overlong, stale experience barely raises a fast pulse, as the movie quickly stumbles into a standard film structure and doesn't even try to break free.

... The movie isn't so much a work of storytelling as it is a marathon of wish-fulfillment moments for comic book enthusiasts -- punches peppered with punchlines.

The culmination of four distinct franchises is an exciting and entertaining product.

It's the humor that's The Avengers' strength.

Whedon's clear fanboy glee is irresistibly contagious to the audience, whether the heroes and villains go at it with fisticuffs or sharp, witty dialogue.

Comic-book movie delivers the goods

By the time the utterly routine (and decidedly endless) finale rolls around, Marvel's The Avengers has unquestionably squandered the potential of its premise and its cast...

Delivers big time with everything longtime fans and newcomers alike could possibly want in a summer blockbuster that definitely surpasses the hype.

This too-long adventure is a sensory overload --- complete with loud, protracted battle scenes and hunky super heroes who provide the necessary eye candy. It's also very funny, and highly entertaining.

There is much humor laced throughout the film, giving it an air of not taking itself too seriously -- which is as it should be in a film of this genre.

The Avengers lives up to every last ounce of hype.

It's a blockbuster that manages to please with intelligence and fun. Whedon makes it look easy.

It's all very smoothly done but comes without a hint of surprise or revelation.
