Rondo to Garnett was the story of the night tonight with the Celtics. Kevin Garnett, who has struggled through the seasons first four games; finally looked like the player that Celtics fans expect him to be for their team. The Celtics built up their lead in the high teens only to have it blown away by the poor performance by the bench on two occasions but the Celtics were able to hold off a fourth quarter rally by the Wizards to hang on for the win 94-86. It was a strong performance by Rajon Rondo and Kevin Garnett though that carried the team to their second victory on the season. Rondo put up tremendous numbers with 18 points 14 assists and 11 rebounds for his first triple double of the season. The Celtics head back to Boston tomorrow to face Washington on the second night of the dreaded back to? backs which have plagued Boston throughout the tenure of the Big Three.
- The Celtics started off the game strong with a Pierce three and KG dunk to take the mixed crowd out of the game
- The Celtics got up by ten points with minutes left in the first quarter with Rondo really taking advantage of matchup against second year player John Wall starting the game with 4 points and 6 assists
- The bench struggled on both ends of the floor to close out the first quarter, the ball movement was stagnant at best and defensive rotations left alot to be desired
- The first quarter ended with a Greg Stiemsma block as the Celtics took a 28-17 lead on what could easily be the best start to a game the Celtics have had all season
- Avery Bradley saw the floor early on, over E?Twaun Moore despite Doc?s open admittance that Moore has passed Bradley on the Celtics depth chart.
- The Celtics took a 51-34 lead into the half
- The biggest number Celtics fans should look at was the zero turnovers from Rajon Rondo in the first half, huge part of the reason why this team was doing so well to start the game off
- The Celtics shot 56% while the Wizards shot 28% from the field? in the first half
- Throughout the first three quarters, the Wizards showed a complete lack of trust and unity as a team. The teams body language showed that the team just didn?t care at points of the game
- JaVale McGee was really the only player to show up for Washington who finished with 14 points and 11 boards, six of which coming on the offensive glass
- The Celtics ended the third, with their 17 point lead shrinking to 13 after a late run by the Wizards against the Celtics bench but still the Celtics lead heading into the final quarter 73-60
- Jermaine O?Neal came out of the game in the second half with a tight hamstring, and needed it to be wrapped, something to keep an eye on
- The things that stood out most out of this game was the lack of fluidity on defense at times, especially with the bench. There were slow rotations and bad plays given up at times
- Secondly, can Rondo continue to put out big numbers, especially on the second night of a back to back, since he has been hitting his jumper more consistently, teams have been forced to play up on him a bit more especially in transition.
- Lastly, Greg Stiemsma got to play 12 minutes in tonights contest, with Jermaine nursing a sore hammy, will Stiemsma start? Will he play more minutes?
