PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? Paul Fussell, an acclaimed literary scholar who won a National Book Award in 1976 for "The Great War and Modern Memory," died Wednesday morning at age 88.
His stepson Cole Behringer said Fussell died of natural causes in a long-term care facility in Medford, Ore. Behringer said his mother and stepfather moved to southern Oregon two years ago from Rochester, N.Y.
In works published over a 50-year career, Fussell wrote memoir, literary criticism, social commentary and standard English Department fare on topics such as English literature and poetic theory. He made his greatest mark writing about war, a subject he knew well, and his disdain for its romanticization.
Fussell enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and was later awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
"At first it was rather fun," he said in a 1997 PBS interview with David Gergen. "It was kind of athletic and lots of fun. It was fast, and amusing, and so forth, and then all of a sudden one realized what the infantry was for. It was for killing the maximum number of young men like you."
His writings would be forever influenced by the horrors he witnessed.
"Every war is ironic because every war is worse than expected. Every war constitutes an irony of situation because its means are so melodramatically disproportionate to its presumed ends," Fussell wrote in "The Great War," his study of World War I that ranked No. 75 on the Modern Library's list of the greatest nonfiction books of the 20th century.
"Great War and Modern Memory" used the work of English poets and authors to demonstrate how war is romanticized and idealized, turned into moral and religious parable, and what happens when the reality of war overwhelms the dream of it. He would continue his literary tour of England and war in "Abroad: British Literary Traveling Between the Wars," tracing British culture and the impact of World War I through the works of Graham Greene, D.H. Lawrence and others. Fussell himself would regard the '20s and '30s as a lost time when traveling had yet to become "tourism," when "seeing and learning" was the object of visiting other countries and not "consuming."
A lawyer's son, Fussell was born and raised in Pasadena, California, and graduated from Pomona College. He earned his advanced degrees from Harvard and later taught at Connecticut College, Rutgers and the University of Pennsylvania. By the time he had entered Pomona College, he was a "conspicuous non-joiner" who "became obsessed with the imagined obligation to go it alone," he wrote in his memoir "Doing Battle: The Making of a Skeptic."
In his early career, he wrote "Poetic Meter and Poetic Form," a well-regarded textbook for understanding poetry, and an analysis of Samuel Johnson.
"Samuel Johnson was his great hero," said John Scanlan, a professor of 18th century British literature at Providence College and a close friend of Fussell's for about 30 years.
Scanlan said Fussell, though an academic, "loved to insert himself into everyday American life."
"Being around Paul was a tonic," he said.

Managing Risks Means Managing Arguments - Justin Fox - Harvard ...
9:52 AM Wednesday May 23, 2012
by Justin Fox?|?Comments
So it was Lyme disease that did it! The tick-borne illness kept JPMorgan Chase's Ina Drew out of the office for extended periods in 2010 and 2011. And it was during Drew's absences, according to a richly detailed account in The New York Times, that the bank's chief investment office, which she ran, began to get into trouble:
The morning conference calls Ms. Drew had presided over devolved into shouting matches between her deputies in New York and London, the traders said. That discord in 2010 and 2011 contributed to the chief investment office's losing trades in 2012, the current and former bankers said.
Whether this really was the main reason for JP Morgan's $3 billion (and growing) trading loss or not, it does at least sound like it could be true. Managing risks ? especially the hard-to-pin-down, moving-target risks that any financial trading operation has to cope with ? inevitably involves arguing. Which is why managing those arguments, as Ina Drew appears to have done brilliantly during the financial crisis but wasn't around to do for the past couple of years, is so important.
The words "risk management" usually evokes less subjective, more data-driven pursuits. But data and objectivity can only get you so far. Philosopher Karl Popper famously proposed that to be scientific, a theory had to be falsifiable: that is, it had to make predictions that could be tested and possibly shown to be wrong. Popper spent a lot of time thinking about this definition of science and the burgeoning science of probablility, which he called propensity. (This summary is from Wittgenstein's Poker, a book I've been reading):
As far as falsification is concerned, he thought that statements involving stable propensities ? such as, 'The die has a one in six chance of landing on six' ? could be tested by looking at what happens in the long run. But isolated statements of propensity ? such as 'There is a propensity of 1/100 that there will be a nuclear holocaust before the year 2050' may resist testing, and to that extent exclude themselves from science.
Routine risks like worker safety and even some day-to-day trading hazards can thus be managed successfully with a mechanistic, scientific approach. But the kind of big-picture bets that JP Morgan's chief investment office made could never be tested, or managed, in that way. Decisions either worked out or they didn't; given the small sample size it was impossible to test what the true probabilities were.
To navigate such unquantifiable hazards, then, you need to make judgment calls. And that's where argument (or discussion, or conversation, if you prefer) comes in. You want diverse, even opposing viewpoints. You want to manage their interactions in a way that allows the quieter, less-senior, less-predictable voices to be heard. You probably do want to accord different weights to the arguments of different people, although deciding how to do so (past track record? clarity of argument?) is hard.
In any case, it should be clear that you don't want to just let the loudest voices win. When that happens, everybody loses. I once heard David Modest, a former partner in the infamous hedge fund Long-Term Capital Management, attribute the unraveling of LTCM to exactly this: a few very certain, very loud partners had been able to override the more tentatively stated doubts of the rest to steer the firm into oblivion. This fits with Philip Tetlock's division of forecasters into hedgehogs and foxes ? those who are more certain (the hedgehogs) are also more likely to be wrong.
This is one reason why the standard risk-management set up at Wall Street firms proved such a bust in the financial crisis. Risk-management chiefs were clearly subordinate at most banks to those who brought in the big bucks, and thus incapable of winning arguments when it really mattered; it was only at places like Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan where the CEO saw himself as risk-manager-in-chief that the process seemed to work at all.
The point applies beyond the financial sector. Successfully managing most of the biggest risks that businesses and societies face requires successfully managing arguments about what exactly those risks are and how seriously they should be taken. It may be that we'll eventually be able to systemize those arguments in a useful way, as computer scientist Peter McBurney and colleagues have been trying to do for the past few years. But in the meantime it's much more art than science.

5 Ways to Create PR Opportunities for Your Freelance Business
One of the biggest challenges for freelancers just starting out is how to get more press and publicity for their business with few funds. As a one-person shop, you can?t spend a fortune employing your own PR rep or a marketing guru.
There are several D-I-Y strategies you can implement to generate positive publicity. What are PR opportunities for your freelance business? You may think PR is only for big companies, but even small freelance shops can benefit from taking advantage of newsworthy opportunities happening in your business, market, and industry.
Here are five ways to create PR opportunities for your freelance business.
1. Send press releases to relevant media outlets.
Drafting a press release is the easy part. Read tips for crafting the perfect press release. But before you write one, consider factors such as what industry you?re in and determine what the key trade publications and media outlets are in your industry.
As an example, if you?re a photographer that specializes in weddings and family events, then you need to draft separate press releases? perhaps one for a wedding or bridal magazine, and another one for parenting magazines. You?ll need to do some research for each publication, finding the relevant news team or section editor. When you write or call them, make sure you sell your story by getting to the point of how a mention of your services in a story would be of interest to the publication?s reading audience.
2. Link your services to a current event.
The biggest question to answer when contacting media outlets is ?So, what?? Why should the editor or journalist you talk to care about your story? First of all, it has to be a story in the first place. In journalism, this is often called the ?news hook? or the lede. In these types of promotional strategies, here?s what you do: when something relevant happens in your industry that?s related to your business, try to latch on to the story.
The biggest question to answer when contacting media outlets is ?So, what?? Why should the editor or journalist you talk to care about your story?
While it certainly helps, your PR doesn?t have to be directly linked to a trend, topical issue, or event. For example, when I finished a ghostwriting project related to parenting, career, and work-life balance for working moms, the author and I came up with a press release that opened with a mention of a popular movie at the time that raised and explored very similar issues.
Adding an essential news hook, or timely quality to your story, makes it appealing for editors and journalists, who can easily include it on their roster of articles to push out. And don?t forget about writing a compelling and catchy title or headline for your PR piece.
3. Present yourself as an expert in your field.
One particular resource to try is HARO, which is a website for connecting media contacts, writers, and journalists with the general public. The idea is simple: If you?re a freelance web designer and want to find material for your design blog, you can hop on HARO and find an expert or various sources to interview for your piece.
You can also use HARO to offer yourself up as an expert in your field. Local newspapers and media outlets writing a story for a national audience will often try to pepper their stories with relevant quotes and stories that have a local angle. If you see something that?s relevant to you, contact the query?s author and let them know you?d like to be interviewed as a source.
HARO is a convenient outlet since you can receive and distribute queries online, but don?t discount just picking up the phone and calling local papers and e-mailing journalists who write stories that cover your professional interests (most writers have a byline with contact details). You can offer yourself as a case study for profiles, as well as be a source for technical information when they need it. Make yourself indispensable to your local media.
4. Develop links to local community groups and business networks.
Get involved with your community by offering to do sponsorships or volunteer work. You can also offer to give a talk about what you do. Don?t discount sites like Skillshare and Meetup, which let you organize group sessions and reach a wider audience.
Setting aside some charity work (e.g., if you?re a freelance web designer, offering to tweak a nonprofit?s website for free) can also be part of your social responsibility efforts for your business. Not only is it beneficial for your community, but also a great way to expand your portfolio and get your name out in the media.
5. Offer to write guest posts at major media outlets and comment on stories.
Writing guest articles, posts, and op-eds can be time-consuming, but it can be a wonderful way for you to reach out to the public about your expertise. Don?t mention your services or business in the story itself. Instead, focus on writing a compelling piece and presenting yourself as an authority on the topic you are writing about.
Check your facts, get your article edited, and make sure you always keep your audience in mind when you write. If it?s an op-ed, make sure you take a strong position and argue it well; media outlets asking you for an op-ed are hoping to generate discussion and debate among its readers.
The byline is where you can do a little more advertising. Make sure you include your business name, website, and other contact details (many writers leave their Twitter accounts or other social media links), and keep it short and sweet.
