Tips to Keep Your Cellphone Charged in a Power Outage - The Blaze

Many on the eastern seaboard probably kept their cellphones on the charger as much as possible yesterday to ensure it would be fully juiced in preparation for a power outage. With more than 7 million remaining in a blackout after Hurricane Sandy swept through with high winds and massive flooding, keeping cellphones alive in the hours to days it might take for service to return is not impossible if you make some small behavior changes.

The website Quartz has some tips for stretching your battery power:

  • Use your laptop: You can charge your cellphone through your laptop battery (provided that?s fully juiced too), if you have a cord to connect the two.
Tips to Keep Your Cellphone Charged in a Power Outage

(Photo: Shutterstock.com)

  • Turn off Wi-Fi:?Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other radios can drain your battery. You can find these off switches in the ?settings? section of most phones.
  • Turn it off completely: As painful as it may sound, if you?re not using it, turn it off. This will help ensure you have the mobile phone for what it was originally created for in the first place: emergencies.
  • Send texts: When communication is vital, sending a quick text message could take less power than a full on phone conversation.
  • Charge it in your car: If you or a friend has a car with a cellphone charger that hopefully fits your specific model, then you?re in luck. Turning on the car and plugging in the device could give you an extra boost to get you through.

Also, as much as you might want to snap photos of the damage around you from the storm, consider whipping out your old point -and-shoot camera and using that instead. Having dozens of apps open and running will drain batteries as well. Shut down apps that you don?t need.

Be sure to check out Quartz?s full article for more details on making your cellphone last here.

Corning may make job cuts as part of cost cuts

(AP) ? Corning said Wednesday that it will likely cut costs, which may include "modest" job cuts, to support profit in a weakening economy.

It's the latest manufacturer to warn that the slowing global growth is hurting its business. Weaker global growth hurt Corning's telecommunications and environmental technologies divisions, but the company said sales of its super-strong Gorilla glass, used in tablets, TVs and other devices, were much better than expected.

The glass and ceramics maker's stock slid 8.4 percent, or $1.13, to $12.28 in midday trading Wednesday.

The Corning, N.Y., company's third-quarter net income dropped 36 percent to $521 million, or 35 cents per share, from $811 million, or 51 cents per share, a year ago. Adjusted profit was 34 cents per share.

Revenue fell 2 percent to $2.04 billion in the July-September quarter.

Despite declines, profit and revenue still topped Wall Street expectations.

""The weakening economy is affecting sales in many of our businesses, with several not achieving the growth expectations we set for the year," said Corning Inc. CFO James Flaws. Higher expenses also hurt profit.

The company expects economic woes will continue next year, and that it will probably have to cut costs to grow profits. Savings will probably come from scaling back project spending, capital expenditures and from job cuts.

No decisions have been made on where the job cuts would be, said Corning spokesman Dan Collins. The company has operations in the U.S., China and other Asian countries, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.

The company expects to take a charge of up to $50 million in the current quarter to cover the cuts.

In the July-September quarter, price declines for LCD glass weighed on Corning's display technologies division, the company's largest by revenue, where sales dropped 6 percent. The company expects glass volumes may drop further in the current quarter.

Lower North American sales, due to the end of the U.S. government's stimulus spending and project delays, and faltering demand in Europe dragged revenue for the telecom division down 7 percent.

Sales in the division that includes Gorilla glass shot up 21 percent.

Declining demand for trucks hurt the company's environment technologies unit, whose products include diesel filters and emissions products for autos. Sales dropped 6 percent.

West Nile virus still popping up, 219 deaths this year

DALLAS (Reuters) - The U.S. outbreak of West Nile virus has killed 219 people this year, after another 36 deaths from the mosquito-borne disease were reported last week, government figures showed Wednesday.

In what is the second-worst year on record for the disease, the total number of cases of West Nile virus across the United States grew to 4,725, with 194 new cases reported, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Although the pace of new cases has slowed since the outbreak's peak in the late summer, new cases continue to be reported, particularly in states where warm temperatures persist. This year's outbreak has trailed only 2003 in total cases.

Just over half of the cases reported to the CDC this year have been of the severe neuroinvasive form of the disease, which can cause meningitis and encephalitis.

The death toll from West Nile is now the highest since 2003, when 264 deaths were reported. The highest number of deaths from West Nile was 284 in 2002.

CDC officials have said deaths often lag weeks to months from the time of infection because of lingering illness.

Almost 70 percent of the cases have been reported in eight states: Texas, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, Illinois, South Dakota, Michigan and Oklahoma.

More than a third of all cases have been reported in Texas, with Dallas-Fort Worth at the center of the outbreak.

The Texas Department of State Health Services has reported 1,683 cases and 77 deaths, including 915 cases and 36 deaths in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Gene Genesis: Scientists Observe New Genes Evolving from Mutated Copies

Researchers have observed in an experiment the exact steps bacterial genes take to evolve a new ability, unexpectedly adding a new twist on an old model

Image: Christian Holm?r (CC) via flickr

The history of life on Earth has been marked by the evolution of new genes?humans clearly have more genes with more diverse functions than do amoebas. So where do these additional genes, with their new roles, come from? Analysis of genomes shows that the duplication and modification of existing genes seems to be a major avenue for such innovation.

Conventional wisdom had it that duplicate genes provide raw material for evolution. The original gene continues to do its job, whereas the other copy is free to evolve in a different direction.

For example, the venomous cocktail delivered by a platypus's spurs includes three peptides remarkably similar to an antimicrobial compound used in the critter's immune system. The venom molecules evolved from duplications of the gene that codes for an immune compound. Scientists refer to groups of similar genes with different functions as families. Humans carry duplications, too?a group of molecules in the back of the eye that react to incoming photons of light hail from the family of opsin genes. Duplicate genes in the human genome were likely key during divergence from our common ancestry with chimps.

The idea that gene duplication could result in genes with new functions has been around for awhile. Geneticist Susumu Ohno explained the theory in detail in 1970. He argued that duplication is the most important evolutionary force?more powerful than genetic drift, for example. Scientists are still working out the specifics because the vast majority of mutations eventually arising in the duplicates are harmful, meaning they result in function loss; the duplicates would need to stick around for generations before acquiring helpful mutations. But the model required that natural selection should spare the extra gene copies until they had a chance to change for the better.

This problem bothered Dan Andersson, a microbiologist at Uppsala University in Sweden, and John Roth, a geneticist at the University of California, Davis. To better explain how new genes could evolve they suggested a modification of the old model: instead of waiting around for a beneficial mutation, perhaps the beneficial mutation comes first.

This model takes note of the fact that many genes do their primary job of coding for a particular protein very well, but also have a weak secondary function that may become important under certain environmental stressors. For example, one gene might code for a protein that helps bacteria gobble glucose, but also allows the bacteria to snack on starchy cellulose. If all sugar disappears from its environment and only cellulose remains, the bacteria that have this gene will have the capacity to eat more cellulose and therefore be selected for over time and endure. Andersson and Roth's model posited that beneficial mutations already present by chance would be favored by natural selection and stick around in the genome. When the gene is amplified through the duplication, the extra copies give rise to new genes that are better at performing the secondary function, thereby making it prime. "The key is that it never goes off selection," Roth says.

In a study in the journal Science, Andersson, Roth and their colleagues demonstrate the process in lab-grown Salmonella enterica. They grew one strain missing a gene key for expressing the essential amino acid tryptophan. The strain needed to rely on another gene, which had a primary job but also a weak ability to take on the missing gene's work. The researchers encouraged the bacteria to duplicate the overworked gene, and its copies gathered mutations?some of which enhanced tryptophan production. At the end of a year's time (3,000 generations later) the bacteria had one gene that did the original job and a second that had evolved a new primary function?manufacturing tryptophan.

Space Politics ? Briefly: Sentinel endorses Nelson; the Science Guy ...

Space Politics

Because sometimes the most important orbit is the Beltway?

The Orlando Sentinel endorsed Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) for reelection on Sunday over his Republican challenger, Connie Mack IV. The editorial cited Nelson?s role as ?a champion for NASA and Florida?s role in the U.S. space program? in its decision. ?A law he co-authored in 2010 wisely extended the life of the International Space Station and supported the development of commercial spacecraft, both positive developments for Florida and the space program as a whole,? the endorsement stated, a reference to the NASA Authorization Act of 2010.

Bill Nye, aka ?The Science Guy,? will be supporting the Obama reelection campaign Monday night on Florida?s Space Coast. Nye is slated to appear at a watch party in Cocoa, Florida, for the third and final presidential debate. Nye, the CEO of The Planetary Society, is also scheduled to appear Tuesday morning at a roundtable about STEM education at Florida Tech. The roundtable is not an official Obama campaign event, according to a release by the campaign?s Florida staff, but ?it is part of Mr. Nye?s trip in support of the campaign.?

How can one be a champion of NASA and be a party to eviscerating it? Ideology trumps logic at the Orlando Sentinel.

On space policy (and in my view the rest of it) there is no alternative but to support Obama. Romney just lies?there is not a single position this year he fills like he cannot modify and then say ?well I never held that position??what a liar. RGO

It?s notable that the Sentinel highlights ISS and commercial cargo/crew, rather than SLS/MPCV, from the 2010 NASA Authorization Act in its endorsement of Nelson.

there is no alternative but to support Obama.

You are in excellent company: Chavez, Putin, the Mullahs, all support Obama. Maybe you should ask, why?

?You are in excellent company: Chavez, Putin, the Mullahs, all support Obama. Maybe you should ask, why??

Not really. When one foreign leader endorses another it is usually in the hopes of pinging people like you?although in Vlad?s case (who is amazingly rational) in large measure I suspect it is because he must view Romney as any sane person does; a person who has no real clue as to the issues of the day?and Putin is really trying to negotiate a path to stabilize Russian/American relations?and stabilize Russia.

The return question is why would you support Romney? An idiot who says he would spend 2 trillion more dollars on the US military without any real reason as to why he can articulate other then the slack jawed comment ?it keeps us strong?

Goofy RGO

Bill Nye, who inveighed against Obama cuts in planetary science and yet supports the man, is kind of like a battered wife, always going back to the abusive spouse.

? mike shupp wrote @ October 22nd, 2012 at 1:12 pm

C?mon Mark, get serious. Obama probably doesn?t look all that wonderful to people interested in planetary space programs, but Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are clearly much less attractive. There isn?t anyone IN THE WORLD making the argument that R&R want an improved planetary science program, or even any sort of planetary science program ? not even Romney and Ryan themselves.

You want to make a funny analogy, you ought to go the whole route with it. Bill Nye?s like an abused wife and Obama?s the abuser. And what?s Romney? A self-proclaimed ax murderer.

Mark Whittington wrote:

?Bill Nye, who inveighed against Obama cuts in planetary science and yet supports the man, is kind of like a battered wife, always going back to the abusive spouse.?

Yes. It seems Bill Nye, the Obama Guy, suffers from the space version of Stockholm Syndrome. He also seems to suffer from the mistaken notion that only Democrats support space exploration. Consequently, The Planetary Society writes off potential support (and membership dues) from Republicans who support space exploration. Given the demographics of the country, Republicans could account for up to half of The Planetary Society?s members. But I know more than a few people who have kissed Bill Nye ?goodbye? because of his blatant political bias. I dropped my own membership after growing weary of reading articles in the society?s magazine which contained far too much political content. I was interested in planetary research ? not Leftist propaganda. How much influence does Bill Nye think The Planetary Society will have in the Romney Administration after he (Nye) campaigned (again) for Barack Obama? Ditto for Elon Musk who has been effusive in his praise for President Obama and outspoken in his criticism of Governor Romney. Elections have consequences.

Get More Done With Less Time ? Building an Online | Home Town

When you are an Internet Marketer it is very important to improve your productivity so that you can get as much as possible from your internet based business. When you?re in the opening stages of your business, there is more effort involved in actually getting as much done as possible so that you can focus on your growth factors. The question that the majority of online marketers need to answer is ?how is it possible to get even more from your time when you have too much to do?? It?s simple ? the answer lies in simplifying your efforts, and in the article below we see how it can be done?

Learn how to properly use the online applications that will help you be more productive while reducing your workload at the same time. There are many tools on the web that are free of cost and can do wonders when it comes down to helping you get more work done.

For example, writing your to-do list on a piece of paper is all fine and good but if you are trying to manage a virtual workload, don?t you think that it would be a better idea to keep your to-do list online as well? You can use any number of online tools to manage your to-do lists. This is just one example, there are so many other tools that can help with other areas of your productivity.

When you are in Internet Marketing, you will be spending lots of time on your computer and if you are smart in your approach with your laptop or desktop you can increase your productivity. For instance, by learning a few keyboard shortcuts you will be able to quickly move from one task to the next and multi-task when you have to. It?s easier to get more accomplished when you know all of the most popular keyboard shortcuts. Nowadays you will see that even online apps, like Gmail use keyboard shortcuts so that you can work smart instead of working hard.

?Touch any task at hand just once? is a rule that most Internet Marketers fail to master; it means that when you look at a task that needs to be completed, get to work on it. Going through it many times without any true course of action isn?t recommended because it won?t get you anywhere. For example, as you go through your email inbox decide right then what you need to do with the email you received: delete, archive or reply to everything and take care of it immediately instead of letting it sit at the back of your head.

Being more productive isn?t just about writing simple to-do lists; it?s about simplifying your approach as much as you can because otherwise you?ll have a much slower approach to moving forward. It?s easy to lose your motivation when you are trying to get ahead in the world of Internet marketing and that is why it is important for you to be able to get things done without wasting time. improving memory

Cilic ousts Klizan in Valencia Open first round - Herald Online

? Marin Cilic of Croatia recovered from a shaky start to beat Slovakia's Martin Klizan 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 in the first round of the Valencia Open on Sunday.

Klizan saved five break points while breaking Cilic's serve twice to easily take the first set on the indoor hard court at the City of Arts and Sciences.

The seventh-seeded Cilic, who has won two tournaments this year, turned things around to roll through the second set before clinching the decider.

Top-seeded David Ferrer, second-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and last year's runner-up Juan Monaco have yet to play in the first round.

Former No. 1-ranked Juan Carlos Ferrero will retire after the tournament. The hometown favorite faces fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro in the first round.

Congo rebels call for negotiations with Kinshasa

BUNGANA, eastern Congo (AP) ? Fighting may resume soon in eastern Congo if President Joseph Kabila's government does not negotiate with the M23 rebels, said the insurgents' president, Bishop Jean-Marie Runiga, Saturday.

"We see that the Congolese army troops are moving, they are preparing a final assault against us. If the government does not come to the negotiating table we will have to defend ourselves," said Runiga at a press conference in Bunagana, a town in the Democratic Republic of Congo at the border with Uganda that is controlled by the M23.

The fact that the M23 rebels control a town so securely that it can hold a public press conference with journalists travelling from the provincial capital of Goma, is an indication of the group's success. The M23 say they have also established an alternative government over the areas of eastern Congo that it controls.

Asked by the Associated Press if they thought of taking the initiative and attacking themselves, the M23 president said that they "could take Goma at any moment. ... If we want to wage war, we can. We have the strength."

Runiga has been spending the past weeks in Kampala, where he said he worked with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to try to open a dialog with the Kabila government in Kinshasa.

"Museveni invited us to negotiate with Kabila and asked us to stop fighting. That is why there has been a ceasefire for two months. But Kinshasa does not want to negotiate or to try to find a solution to the crisis quickly. They rather talk with Rwanda," said the M23 president.

A leaked United Nations experts report accuses Rwanda and Uganda of supporting the rebels. It reportedly charges that the Rwandan minister of defence, General James Kabarebe, is directing the M23 rebels.

Runiga said the report is wrong and deplored that neighboring countries are blamed for what are mainly internal Congolese problems. He said the M23 is the result of bad governance in Kinshasa.

"The U.N. report was created by Kinshasa intelligence services. It is a strategy to make people forget that the country is not well managed," he said.

According to Runiga the M23 is receiving new Congolese army defectors every day and does not need the military support of Rwanda and Uganda.

He announced that the military branch of the M23 group has been renamed the Congolese Revolutionary Army (Arm?e R?volutionaire

Congolaise) and its leader, Colonel Sultani Makenga, has been promoted to general to reflect the growing number of troops under his command.

Runiga strongly denied accusations by a recent Human Rights Watch report that the M23 rebels recruit children into their ranks.

"There are children without parents who come to us to join our ranks but we turn them back and pay for their school fees," he said.

The M23 is a rebellion that was created by Congolese army deserters in May. The members are mainly ethnic Tutsis. Its leaders demand that agreements made with the Congo government when they were integrated in the army in 2009 are respected.

Dell bets on pre-packaged data center systems for corporations

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Dell Inc is betting that companies would prefer to buy pre-packaged systems to establish data centers, launching a product that combines the company's server, storage, network and software products as the No. 3 PC seller looks to expand in the lucrative enterprise sector.

Dell's new enterprise business chief Marius Haas said Dell intend to push ahead aggressively to grab a bigger portion of the $110 billion market catering to the technology needs of corporations.

The company in an event in San Francisco announced its "converged infrastructure" product called Active Systems, which is pre-configured infrastructure that can used to set up virtual desktops and private remote-computing capabilities.

Dell has been actively buying companies to expand its offerings to corporations, diversifying away from personal computers, a market whose growth is decelerating as Apple Inc's iPad and other mobile devices pull customers away.

The company is undertaking a turnaround even as global tech spending appears to be slipping. To shore up margins and generate revenue growth, Dell is trying to expand further into enterprise computing, where it then goes up against larger rival Hewlett Packard.

Haas said Dell has invested $12.7 billion in acquiring companies to bolster its products in the enterprise market. Some of Dell's acquisitions in this sector include SonicWALL and AppAssure.

The former HP networking executive, who joined Dell in August from private-equity firm KKR & Co, is leading a unit that accounts for over 30 percent of the company's total revenue and more than 50 percent of its margins.

The business was a rare bright spot in Dell's fiscal second quarter, with enterprise revenue rising 6 percent to $4.9 billion.

"Investors are underestimating Dell's enterprise potential," Haas said in an event in San Francisco.

Shell hits Yemen weapons store, kills one

SANAA (Reuters) - A shell fired towards a Yemeni general's headquarters in the capital Sanaa hit a weapons store, setting off explosions that killed at least one soldier and wounded five on Thursday, a Yemeni army source said.

A Reuters witness heard two blasts and saw a large cloud of dust above the camp, where General Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar is based.

Other witnesses said they saw at least two unexploded rockets, apparently set off by the blasts in the arms depot, that had landed in parts of the capital, one near the U.S. embassy.

Ahmar defected during last year's uprising against President Ali Abdullah Saleh and currently leads part of the army under Saleh's successor Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

A military source in Ahmar's force, known as the First Division, said a rocket fired from outside the camp had landed on an ammunition cache, setting off the explosions.

Authorities were still trying to find out who set off the rocket, the source said. One soldier was killed and five others were injured, he added.

The Yemeni defense ministry said the blasts were caused by an accident at the ammunition store, but gave no further details. A statement on the ministry's website said unexploded shells had landed in some Sanaa neighborhoods and sappers had gone out to disarm them.

Ahmar broke away from the Yemeni army shortly after street protests against Saleh's 33-year-rule broke out early last year. At the time, he said his move was aimed at protecting demonstrators who had set up a protest camp in the center of the Yemeni capital.

Hadi is trying to reunify the armed forces, which are still partly controlled by relatives of the former president.
