Mayor hopes London torch tour to lift Olympic mood

LONDON (Reuters) - Crowds of thousands cheered the Olympic torch relay through London on Saturday on the final leg of its tour around Britain, generating excitement that organisers hope will dispel lingering fears about the event's organisation and security.

The relay, which began in London's historic maritime district of Greenwich, drew a lively crowd as it passed by the myriad curry houses of east London's Brick Lane, though the ensuing traffic gridlock underlined the challenges of hosting the Games in one of the world's busiest cities.

Weeks of rain and logistical problems have prompted a slew of negative headlines in Britain's famously critical press ahead of the July 27 to August 12 Games, with organisers struggling to recruit enough private security guards, forcing them to look to the army for help. Transport and border staff are also expected to strike soon, causing further headaches.

Still, that failed to dampen the crowd's enthusiasm.

"It might be inconvenient for two weeks, but it's such an advertisement for Britain, for London. We're so excited," said Rebecca Hurley, 46, who was with her husband and two daughters.

Others nearby, however, were far from thrilled, highlighting the cynicism with which some in Britain see the Games.

"I'm really not interested in sport. It's hyped-up and annoying - two weeks of hell," said barwoman Sophie Turner, 20.

Her friend said she was worried about bomb attacks.

More British army personnel will be drafted in to secure the games than are currently serving in Afghanistan, partly to make up for the shortfall of security guards.

The Olympic torch arrived in London on Friday after touring scores of British cities, towns and villages, delivered by a Royal Marine Commando who abseiled from a helicopter into the Tower of London, one of the capital's main tourist attractions.

In the coming days, the torch will be carried around London's religious, political and royal landmarks, culminating in the lighting of the Olympic cauldron in east London.

"As it sprints through the city, I know that its radiance will dispel any last remaining clouds of dampness and anxiety ... and it will spread the crackling bush fire of Olympic enthusiasm throughout the city," London Mayor Boris Johnson told reporters, referring to the torch.

FOCUS ON ATHLETES

Foreign media covering the run-up to the Games have poked fun at what they say is the British tendency to whinge, with an article in the New York Times listing Londoners' favourite sports as "complaining, expecting the worst and cursing the authorities".

But while organisational difficulties in hosting the Games may have dominated the domestic headlines in recent weeks, attention is now increasingly turning to the athletes and the political backdrop of the countries they represent.

In Britain, pressure is mounting for its athletes to beat or at least maintain the fourth place they achieved on the medal table at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

"This will be the most competitive Olympic Games in history and we don't take for granted for one moment that this will be easy," Andy Hunt, chief executive of the British Olympic Association and chef de mission of Team GB, told reporters.

African neighbours Kenya and Ethiopia, giants of middle and long distance running, will renew their long tussle for dominance of the running track.

Isolated, impoverished North Korea will face the United States, with which it is technically still at war, on the football field when their women's teams face each other on July 31.

On Saturday, Turkey said Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan will travel to London as part of his country's team to push for the 2020 Olympics to be held in Istanbul.

Athletes began arriving in London last weekend, and on Saturday Libya's delegation to the Games left Tripoli for the British capital, hopeful that the committee's president, taken from his car by gunmen last week, would join them.

MOOD LIFTING?

The threat of transport delays looms over the event, with border officials planning to go on strike on July 26 and train drivers in central England set to walk out from August 6-8.

London's "Tube", a 19th century creation that is the oldest underground railway network in the world, sometimes struggles to cope with the millions of commuters it transports today.

Misgivings over heavy-handed enforcement of copyright on Olympic branding have also marred the run-up, amid reports of vendors being banned from displaying Olympic rings in shop windows or selling types of fast food sold by Olympic sponsors.

Michael Payne, a former Olympic marketing director credited with reeling in sponsors such as Coca-Cola and McDonalds, told Britain's Independent newspaper that the Olympic authorities' policing of the sponsorship deals had "gone too far".

Still, there are signs that the negative headlines may give way to more positive ones as the Games near.

An Ipsos MORI poll on Friday found that 71 percent of Britons believe the Olympics will boost the public mood and that 61 percent think hosting the Games will boost Britain's image abroad.

Murdoch Has Left A Bunch Of News Corp' s ... - Business Insider

LONDON (AP) ? Media mogul Rupert Murdoch has resigned as a director of a number of News Corp. subsidiary boards in Britain and the United States, a spokeswoman confirmed Saturday.

Murdoch stepped down this past week as a director of NI Group, Times Newspaper Holdings and News Corp. Investments in the U.K., said Daisy Dunlop, spokeswoman for News Corp.'s British arm, News International. The companies oversee Britain's newspapers The Sun, The Times, and The Sunday Times.

It was not immediately clear which of News Corp.'s U.S. boards Murdoch had left. Britain's Telegraph newspaper, which first reported the news late Saturday, said those details had not yet been disclosed by the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

News International sought to play down the significance of the resignations, saying in a statement that "this is nothing more than a corporate housecleaning exercise prior to the company split."

That was a reference to News Corp.'s announcement June 28 that it would separate its publishing business from its much more profitable media and entertainment business ? forming two distinct, publicly traded companies. Under those proposed changes, Murdoch, 81, will chair both of the companies, although he would continue as chief executive of the media and entertainment company only.

Saturday's announcement suggests that Murdoch may be distancing himself from his British newspaper interests, which have been shaken to the core by a widespread phone hacking scandal.

The scandal erupted anew last year when it emerged that Murdoch's now-defunct News of the World tabloid had systematically hacked voicemails of politicians and celebrities. The revelations have rocked Britain's establishment and triggered three parallel police investigations that have resulted in more than 40 arrests.

Illegal eavesdropping allegations at the News of the World led to the resignation of Rebekah Brooks, then-CEO of News International, who has been accused of perverting justice in the scandal.

As Kenya's Olympians run, a divided nation has chance to unite

Ethnic divisions following the 2007 elections drove some Kenyan communities to violence. Some now see the upcoming Olympic Games as a chance for national unity.

Most of the team members belong to a single ethnic group. Indeed, most of the athletes come from one particular town. Yet, the recent ethnic violence that has emanated from the town of Eldoret in the Rift Valley ? driven by a combination of political ambition and ethnic resentment ? makes the dominance of ethnic Kalenjins on the Kenyan Olympic team a matter of some concern. Will Kenyans set aside ethnic differences during the Olympic games, and unify as one nation? ?

?When the games begin, Kenyan will sit together as citizens of one country and cheer their runners,? says Ben Mutsotso, a sociologist at the University of Nairobi. ?The games bring us a sense of pride, fame, and unity to all Kenyans regardless of their tribes, race, or class. That will benefit peace.?

Four years ago, Kenya descended into a bloody post-election violence following a dispute over a tightly contested presidential election.?The violence erupted Dec. 28, after President Mwai Kibaki, from the Kikuyu tribe was declared the winner and Raila Odinga, from the Luo tribe. Later the prime minister said the polls had been stolen.

Within hours, the Rift Valley town of Eldoret erupted in flames, as youth from the Kalenjin tribe, who had supported Mr. Odinga and his Kalenjin allies, attacked their Kikuyu neighbors, who were presumed to be supporters of Mr. Kibaki. Kikuyu youth in Kenya?s Central Province responded soon afterward with attacks on Luo and Kalenjin neighbors. Some 1,300 people were killed and 600,000 displaced from their homes, before both sides settled down to negotiations to form a coalition government.

Even today, thousands of displaced Kenyans live in displacement camps around Eldoret and Kapsabet, but the government hopes these people will return to their homes ahead of the next general elections, scheduled for March 2013. Church pastors and community leaders have attempted to open lines of dialogue between the various communities, but civic activists say that the Olympic Games this summer could be a building block for bridging the remaining gap between these communities.

?The games will present a moment for all Kenyans to unite in cheering the team without thinking of their tribal background,? says Col. Benjamin Muema, the spokesperson of the Political Parties Collaborative Leaders Forum, an umbrella body for Kenya's political parties. ?I think we need to galvanize that as we approach the elections.??

In practice, Kenyans do tend to unite around their sports figures, regardless of ethnicity.?In 2008, despite the violence, Kenyans across the country united in front of television screens to cheer on their team at the Olympics in Beijing. And while Kalenjins do dominate the Kenyan team, athletes from other ethnic groups -- such as middle-distance runner David Rudisha (a Maasai) and 1500-meters runner Helen Obiri (a Kisii) -- help to spread out the pride.

For Douglas Wakiihuri, a former long distance runner, who won Kenya?s first gold medal in the Marathon in the 1987 World Athletic Championship in Rome, the question is whether that unity can continue after the games. ?There already some fears, but as a nation we should carry that spirit of unity to the elections,? he said.

Political campaigns in the past have often reminded Kenyans of their ethnic resentments, with one ethnic group complaining about the supposed economic and political advantages of other ethnic groups, and some Kenyan politicians have already started campaigning for the March 2013 elections. Civic activists say these politicians should borrow a page from the Olympic athletes? playbook and set aside their ethnic identities to work for the advancement of the country.

?Maybe we should have the politicians train with the athletes, so that they can learn something about unity,? says Colonel Muema.

Mesothelioma Cancer: Mesothelioma an Aggressive Cancer

Mesothelioma an Aggressive Cancer

Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer type with no cure yet. The leading cause of this disease is exposure to asbestos, which is a naturally occurring silicate. No amount of asbestos exposure is safe although this disease develops after chronic exposure.

Between the exposure itself and the mesothelioma cancer detection usually there is a 20 to 40 (even 50 years) years elapse.

In the development of the mesothelioma cancer the long exposure time is of decisive importance, just as the type of asbestos and the fiber size.

Asbestos today is banned from construction and all of the other industries, which a few decades ago frequently used it.

Mesothelioma is often mistaken to lung cancer because it mostly affects the pleura (thoracic cavity) among other thin membranes, which cover the organs in our body.

Other membranes where mesothelioma develops are: the peritoneum (in the abdominal cavity) the pericardium (fibroserous sac which encloses the heart), and the tunica vaginalis (serous membrane, which covers the front and sides of the testis and epididymis).

The general mesothelioma symptoms are: cough, husky voice, shortness of breath or difficulty to breathe, difficulty while swallowing, chest pain or abdominal swelling and pain, fatigue, anemia, the loss of appetite, weight loss, cachexia, fluid in the chest or abdomen, inability to sleep.

It is very difficult to diagnose mesothelioma and to connect the symptoms with the cancer because many of the symptoms can easily be mistaken for other more common, not life threatening diseases like heart disease, flu, pneumonia or bronchitis.

As mentioned above there are three main types of mesothelioma cancers: malignant pleural mesothelioma, malignant pericardial mesothelioma and malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.

Other occurring mesothelioma types (not very common): testicular, epithelial, biphasic, cystic, liver, brain, papillary, adenocarcinoma, sarcomatoid and desmoplastic mesothelioma.

There are three main options for treating mesothelioma cancer: surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. These three treatment options are often combined for an effective treatment. During surgery, the cancer cells are removed and post-surgery mesothelioma doctors usually use radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

Treating mesothelioma cancer with these methods will give the patients a possible extension of five years to their lives.

Additional treatments used by mesothelioma doctors are anti-angiogenesis drugs, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation therapy, gene therapy, immunotherapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, and intraoperative photodynamic therapy.

In order to treat efficiently a mesothelioma cancer patient a unified and effective cooperation of general practitioners, epidemiologists, pathologists, thoracic surgeons, radiation therapists, oncologists, rehabilitation specialists and psychotherapists is required.

Find out more about mesothelioma victims. Contact a mesothelioma doctor in your area.
