Hands-on with an iPhone 5 dummy at IFA 2012

We've seen case manufacturers put together dummy Apple products before, and while they're not always perfectly accurate, they can often be based on actual parts or specs smuggled out of the supply line. The above video was filmed at IFA 2012 and shows a quick hands-on with one such dummy, in this case an iPhone 5 by GSM Israel News.

Take it as an approximation of what the iPhone 5 might look and handle like, but don't take it as anything more than that.

The video shows the iPhone 5 dummy in an unmarked skin case. Once removed, it looks pretty much identical to the assembled parts leaks we've seen shown off previously, complete with iPhone identifier and markings on the back. It remains taller, with a 4-inch, 16:9 screen and a centered FaceTime Camera. And it remains primarily metal-backed, with RF-friendly glass sections above and below so it can connect to networks and other devices via cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. The 3.5mm headphone jack remains at the bottom, and the new, miniaturized Dock connector is in full view. As is a curious little oblong between the rear, iSight camera and the LED flash.

September 12 is less than 2 weeks away.

"Raindrops Keep Fallin'" songwriter Hal David dies at 91

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hal David, a lyricist who along with Burt Bacharach took the pop world by storm in the 1960s by writing such hits as "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on my Head" and "Walk on By," died in Los Angeles on Saturday at age 91, a representative said.

David died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center of complications from a stroke, said Jim Steinblatt, spokesman for the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, or ASCAP.

Earlier this year, David and Bacharach received the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from the Library of Congress, during a White House musical tribute.

David, a native of Brooklyn, New York, began his songwriting career in the late 1940s by collaborating with writers he had met at Manhattan's famed Brill Building, which at the time was the center of the pop industry.

He started working with Bacharach in the late 1950s and their songs were recorded by such artists as Frank Sinatra, Marty Robbins, Tom Jones and Barbra Streisand.

The singer most associated with the songwriting duo is Dionne Warwick, who rose to fame by scoring a number of Top 10 hits in the 1960s with material from David and Bacharach.

Bacharach's and David's song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on my Head" was written for the 1969 movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and won the Academy Award for Best Song.

The duo's other hits included "What the World Needs Now Is Love," "I Say a Little Prayer," "Do You Know the Way to San Jose," and "(They Long to Be) Close to You," which is best known from a version by the Carpenters.

David and Bacharach parted ways in the early 1970s. David went on to work with other composers. With Albert Hammond, he wrote the hit "To All the Girls I've Loved Before."

Songwriter Paul Williams, president and chairman of ASCAP, said in a statement that David was "simple, concise and poetic."

"It is no wonder that so many of his lyrics have become part of our everyday vocabulary and his songs ... the backdrop of our lives," Williams said.

David served as president of ASCAP from 1980 to 1986.

His parents were immigrants from Austria. His older brother, Mack David also achieved success in music by composing or co-writing a number of songs, including the 1944 "Candy" and the English version of Edith Piaf's "La Vie En Rose."

David is survived by his wife, Eunice, sons Jim and Craig, three grandchildren and two stepsons.

Mophie readies Galaxy S III Juice Packs, coming very soon

If you thought Mophie was planning to keep its smartphone Juice Packs exclusively Apple-based -- we'd have probably agreed with you. But then we got to take a look at this pair of cases crafted for Samsung's Galaxy S III. Yep, the battery-packing cover (which looks likely to fit all the current iterations) promises to give "over double the battery life" of your un-augmented handset. This was just a brief peek -- but expect the (as-yet unpriced) cases to appear in stores around the end of October, early November.

Stop paying PLI or no further equity infusion, Centre tells Air India

The government-appointed oversight committee monitoring the implementation of Air India?s Turnaround Plan (TAP) has warned the national carrier that if it continues to pay Performance-Linked Incentive (PLI) to its employees, the government will stop further equity infusion into the ailing carrier. The government has committed Rs 30,000 crore, to be paid in tranches till 2020, to keep the debt-laden carrier flying, as per a HT report by Tushar Srivastava. ?Equity infusion is tied to milestones achieved by the airline. The foremost condition of the TAP, approved by the Cabinet, was freezing of PLI till the airline turns profitable. This hasn?t happened till now,? a senior government official said.

The oversight committee met last week. ?RS Gujral, Secretary, Expenditure, chaired the meeting,? a source said. A senior AI official said they were hopeful of convincing the panel to release the next tranche of equity when it meets next. ?The Justice Dharmadhikari Committee that was formed to sort out integration issues in Air India had recommended that the company should continue paying PLI,? the official argued.

The Civil Aviation Ministry officials said the Cabinet?s decision was sacrosanct. ?It was the Cabinet that cleared equity infusion. It had set certain conditions for release of money and stopping PLI was foremost. The Dharmadhikari panel only made recommendations. They are not binding on the government,? said an official.
